Canon EOS RP

The mirrorless Canon EOS RP comes from the same stable as the highly-acclaimed EOS R. Will it prove to be as much of a thoroughbred as the original?

Lighter and more portable

The EOS RP’s body weighs just 440g, so it's more than 20% lighter than the original EOS R. It's also noticeably smaller in size, making it a compact and highly portable model that feels great in your hand.

Full on, full frame sensor

The Canon-developed full frame CMOS sensor gives you full on image quality, certainly more impressive than APS-C or Micro Four Thirds sensors. Full frame sensors eliminate the crop factor caused by smaller sensors, so your wide-angle lenses can reach their full potential.

More ways to be creative

One of the biggest selling points of the EOS RP is the wide range of creative shooting modes, including extra automatic modes and built-in feature guides. Fully automatic, semi-automatic and manual shooting modes let you choose your level of control.

Reassuringly traditional

In amongst all that is new in the EOS RP is a traditional EOS mode dial, which makes it easier for many of us who are moving from a DSLR to a mirrorless camera system.

Just keep shooting

The EOS RP mirrorless camera, because of its compact and lightweight design, uses a smaller LPE17 battery. Don't be fooled into thinking this equals a lack of power; you still get 250 shots per charge when using the EVF.

Canon EOS RP review: Full-frame mirrorless goes affordable

The RP is the step-down model to the EOS R, but we find the more affordable camera a better handler on account of its layout and size. However, limited battery life, some mis-balanced issues when using larger lenses, and 4K crop in video capture are all niggling issues.

Great camera for the price; Solid AF and metering performance; Top noise control in high ISO; Touchscreen control;

Poor battery life; Cropped 4K capture; Smaller body and grip - some lenses aren't well balanced; Current lack of affordable lenses;

Canon EOS RP Digital SLR Camera Body - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features

Canon EOS RP Digital SLR Camera Body - Brand New review

The iPhone 14 isn’t much of an upgrade over the iPhone 13, but it’s still a great device and an upgrade for anyone coming from the iPhone 11 or older.

Great camera, Good battery, Emergency features are cool, Still excellent performance

Display could use some upgrades

Canon EOS RP review

The Canon EOS RP's specifications aren't exactly exciting, but don't let that fool you - it's a likable little camera with engaging controls, good build quality and it produces excellent JPEGs. Of course, the Raw files are noisier and aren't as malleable as some more contemporary full-frame cameras, but for the target audience, that won't likely be a deal breaker. For those users looking for a friendly way to get into full-frame imaging, the EOS RP is an excellent option.

Newer users getting into full-frame for the first time, existing Canon users looking for a second camera body, anyone looking for a travel-friendly full-frame camera for casual use.;

Those looking to shoot high quality video, power users who want the most out of their Raw files, and those who routinely shoot fast action and need faster burst speeds.;

Canon EOS RP Digital SLR Camera Body - Brand New review

More like an iPhone 13S. The generational upgrades for the iPhone 14 are limited to a few subtle changes. At the same time, however, the base price climbs to 800 USD, while the only true innovation happens inside the iPhone 14 Pro series.

excellent OLED display, dust- and waterproof, fast Wi-Fi, wide range of supported frequencies, great camera, very fast performance, good battery life

display limited to 60 Hz, charging rate limited to 20 watts, no macro lens, wide notch

Canon EOS RP review

These past six months have been some of the most eventual in recent memory when it comes to new photography kit. With three new mirrorless systems, all bearing full-frame fruits, a market that Sony has up until now had (almost) had to itself is now set to become a whole lot more vibrant.

Compact and light body; Very good value for money; Generous buffer - better than quoted; Very good AF performance; Responsive touchscreen

Limited native lens selection; Rolling shutter and crop in 4K video; Slightly sensitive metering system; No sensor-based image stabilization; Underwhelming battery life; Silent shooting very limited

Canon EOS RP Digital SLR Camera Body - Brand New review

The SRP for Canon EOS RP body is RM 5,999 of which I think is very high a price tag to command for a body as such. As you can see I didn’t touch on matters like 4K and the various complaints you probably seen from other reviews. I’d say case by case, and depends on what you need.
