Canon EOS M

Image quality as strong as you'll find from a DSLR, but dithering autofocus and awkward ergonomics spoil the venture

Canon EOS M Review: Playing Catch-Up In The Mirrorless Race

Mirrorless cameras have matured into serious alternatives to DSLRs. Some of the biggest brands failed to anticipate that success. One of them, Canon, is now trying to play catch-up. Its first attempt, the EOS M, dropped late last year after much anticipation.

No. Canon's effort on the EOS M buttresses those frustrated users who believe that their beloved brand is focusing more on protecting their markets than they are on innovating. The M is just too safe and too boring in a time when other companies are pushing the envelope and offering more in almost...

SLR quality pictures without much compromise

A week spent with the EOS-M yielded some great pictures, even when shooting some in smart scene automatic mode. The compact form factor has helped me take the camera out much more often than my SLR and I didn't miss much functionality.

Superior build quality; Easy to use

Canon EOS M Review

After using this camera, I had very mixed feelings about what to conclude and what to recommend. Canon's first compact system camera is deliberately aimed at the ‘cross over' user, but it's still packed solid with D-SLR features. Whatever Canon's reasons for waiting so long to launch its mirrorless interchangeable lens camera system, there's little doubt the strategy has worked in its favour.

Canon EOS M Mirrorless Camera Review

There are cheaper competitors available than the Canon EOS M, with quicker focus, a larger choice of lenses, as well as features including Wi-Fi. In addition, the other systems available either feature a built in pop-up flash or smaller external flashes.

Excellent noise performance up to ISO3200; Excellent image quality; Excellent colour reproduction; Excellent touch screen; Solid body with good handling; despite size; Mic socket

Little warning that the battery is going flat; Struggles to focus in low light; No built in Panoramic mode; Limited number of lenses; Short battery life

Canon EOS M Review

If you really want a compact shooter that will work with your existing Canon lenses, the EOS M delivers with caveats. For everyone else, wait if you can.

Solid construction; The use of Canon's full line of lenses (via optional adapter; DSLR sensor; Great image and video quality

Slow autofocusing system; Time-consuming settings adjustments; No viewfinder
