July 23rd. Canon has today announced its first step into the compact mirrorless camera market with the introduction of the 18MP Canon EOS M compact mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.

If it isn't actually a canon lens cap, I can't tell the difference. It is indistinguishable from my other caps directly from canon.

Well by no fault of his own the first review of this camera is incorrect. Just bought the Canon EOS M 18-55mm Lens at Future Shop on the weekend, and noticed in tiny little print right at the bottom left side of the box the words "SPEEDLITE 90EX" which is the official flash made for the EOS M.

The EOS M, announced today, has been anticipated ever since the company announced the PowerShot G1X in January. Interestingly, the new camera is totally unlike the G1X, except in packing a large sensor into a compact camera body.

Looking for SLR-like image quality in a compact body? The EOS M offers the best of both worlds, with the added benefit of interchangeable lenses. However, its sluggish autofocus may deter point-and-shoot upgraders. Suffice to say, the EOS M had so much potential to disrupt the ILC market.

Mirrorless cameras have matured into serious alternatives to DSLRs. Some of the biggest brands failed to anticipate that success. One of them, Canon, is now trying to play catch-up. Its first attempt, the EOS M, dropped late last year after much anticipation.

Canon has thus far resisted the lure of the halfway house, waiting four years longer than rivals such as Panasonic to deliver a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. Has the time been spent wisely, waiting for others to bash the kinks out of the format before arriving with a market leader?

A week spent with the EOS-M yielded some great pictures, even when shooting some in smart scene automatic mode. The compact form factor has helped me take the camera out much more often than my SLR and I didn't miss much functionality.
