The Canon EOS 90D is a mid-to-high-end DSLR camera. It's a successor of Canon EOS 80D, it's a good camera for action and wildlife photographers.

This product has a few upgrades against its predecessor. It has a new CMOS sensor of 32.5 megapixels instead of a 24.2 sensor on the 80D. It uses a newer DIGIC 8 Processor, but its predecessor uses DIGIC 6. It has eye detection AF & spot AF and a new AF joystick. This camera can do focus bracketing, but its predecessor can't. It can shoot up to 10 fps continuous, while its predecessor shoots at 7 fps. It has Bluetooth, but without NFC, while its predecessor has no Bluetooth, but has NFC.

Canon EOS 90D review: Keeping the DSLR relevant

As each new mirrorless camera continues to one up the last, the DSLR is trying desperately not to be relegated to the bargain bin. Armed with Dual Pixel Autofocus (DPAF) and a 10-frames-per-second burst speed, the $1,200 Canon EOS 90D is the embodiment of Canon’s promise that DSLRs will remain relevant in the mirrorless era. While the best mirrorless cameras outclass most DSLRs when it comes to continuous shooting speed, 10 fps is anything but slow and a decent step up from the EOS 80D. Importantly, it’s also an additional 2 fps faster than the Nikon D7500, despite the 90D having 12 more megapixels. And thanks to DPAF, in live view the 90D almost feels like a mirrorless camera, if you can ignore the heft of the it. Housing the same 32.5-megapixel APS-C crop sensor as the mirrorless EOS M6 Mark II, the 90D, on paper, offers specifications to put it in league with the best DSLRs. But, that still leaves the question: Can the 90D offer enough perks to warrant buying a heavier DSLR instead ...
Pros:
  • Excellent speed
  • Dual Pixel Autofocus
  • Uncropped 4K
  • Comfortable design
  • Excellent battery life
Cons:
  • Heavy
  • Small buffer
  • Tracking and eye AF struggles

Canon EOS 90D review: Is this 32-megapixel DSLR the perfect match?

At a glance Canon's latest enthusiast DSLR doesn't appear that different to the outgoing 80D. But with a large bump in resolution and burst shooting it's an altogether different beast. Add 4K video shooting and this versatile shooter looks like it will reign as the mid-range master for 2019 and beyond. But treat it with some caution: the high resolution high-stakes does mean grain at higher ISO settings, while moving subjects are more challenging too.
Pros:
  • Vari-angle screen is very useful
  • Capable autofocus system for still and moving subjects
  • Video capture is now 4K capable
  • High-resolution images are miles beyond casual cameras/phones
Cons:
  • Single SD card slot
  • No in-body stabilisation
  • Autofocus points don't always illuminate
  • High resolution can mean caution when shooting any moving subject
  • Limited autofocus options in live view mode

Canon EOS 90D review

If you still prefer DSLRs to mirrorless cameras, there's a lot to like about the Canon EOS 90D – it's a feature-packed DSLR with a high-resolution sensor and speedy, smooth performance. Its deeper grip, another benefit over mirrorless rivals, makes it comfortable to use for long periods, while the impressive battery life is a boon too. For those who already have Canon glass or are unwilling to make the move to the mirrorless, this snapper is a formidable all-round option.
Pros:
  • High resolution image sensor
  • Uncropped 4K/30p video
  • Ergonomic grip
  • Joystick control
Cons:
  • No image stabilization
  • Default JPEG noise reduction level insufficient
