It's not long since conventional photographer wisdom stated that no-one needed more than 12 megapixels. However, after Nikon reignited the megapixel race with the D800 , and with 250-megapixel cameras on the horizon, pixels (along with sensor size) are once again where it's at.

Canon EOS 5DS review by chweyd

The image quality of the 5Ds is amazing but it did not came as a surprise. With 50.6 MP on a full frame the pixel density is very similar (actually a little lower) compared to APS-C cameras like the 70D.

Canon EOS 5Ds

For a long time in photography circles, there were two rival camps – those who swore by the versatility of the DSLR and image purists who lay their allegiance to the superior quality delivered by medium format cameras. The Canon EOS 5Ds could well be considered the bridge between the two.

Superb image quality; Excellent build; Familiar controls and layout

Produces large files; Only 5 frames per second; Limited ISO range

So, is the Canon EOS 5Ds worth the US$3,700 asking price, and worthy of a place in your kit bag? If you are after a high-megapixel DSLR, the short answer is yes! The 5Ds sets the new standard of what high resolution DSLRs can do, and becomes the camera to beat.

Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R review - hands on

Canon has mostly avoided getting into a battle for higher pixel counts with rival Nikon, hovering around the 21-megapixel mark for its full-frame 5D Mk II and 5D Mk III . That all changed earlier this month when the company revealed not one, but two new flagship models; the 5DS and 5DS R.

The 5DS and 5DS R are not replacement models, but two parts of a new high-resolution line. Based on the design of the highly successful 5D MkIII and incorporating a few of the 7D MkII's advancements, the 5DS is a more specialist camera than both, aimed specifically at studio and landscape...
