Canon has mostly avoided getting into a battle for higher pixel counts with rival Nikon, hovering around the 21-megapixel mark for its full-frame 5D Mk II and 5D Mk III . That all changed earlier this month when the company revealed not one, but two new flagship models; the 5DS and 5DS R.

Although I only need about 24-28 megapixels for most of my work, I succumbed to temptation after seeing the 5DS for sale at GBP1880 as a grey import. I've only had it a few days but I've taken a lot of test shots to establish the usable ISO range, and to calibrate the AF micro-adjust, picture style...

The Canon EOS 5DS is a natural follow-up to the three-year-old 5D MKIII , a legendary model beloved of many photographers. However, this isn't a wholesale replacement, and isn't even the better performer in every single respect.
