Canon EOS 5DS DSLR Lab Review

The new Canon EOS 5DS DSLR offers the first full-frame sensor camera with image resolution higher than 50MP. The camera is the successor of the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, which uses a 22MP sensor and was introduced in 2012.

It's not long since conventional photographer wisdom stated that no-one needed more than 12 megapixels. However, after Nikon reignited the megapixel race with the D800 , and with 250-megapixel cameras on the horizon, pixels (along with sensor size) are once again where it's at.

With a huge pixel count – find out how Canon's new 50-megapixel DSLRs shape up in our Canon EOS 5DS / 5DS R review. Canon made headlines earlier this year when it introduced two new 50 million pixel SLR models to its line-up, smashing the previous highest resolution model (the 36 million pixel Nikon...

Canon EOS 5DS review by chweyd

The image quality of the 5Ds is amazing but it did not came as a surprise. With 50.6 MP on a full frame the pixel density is very similar (actually a little lower) compared to APS-C cameras like the 70D.

High pixel count; weather sealed

A great camera.

I've been using a 5DSR for a few months now and I honestly love it. There are downsides. It's insanely expensive. The closeness of the pixels in the sensor mean that it sometimes can't capture movement, such as hair on a portrait subject in a breeze, whereas a 5D mark iii wouldn't struggle at all to...

Canon 5DS R

Nice solid built camera. The 50MP sensor lets you do a lot of cropping and still have great results. Battery doesn't last as long as it did in my 6D and the ISO range is not as good as my 6D either. However the big file size is what I really wanted - the other issues I can deal with.

Review: Canon EOS 5DS

‘That's more megapixels than most photographers will ever need,' we thought when those cameras first launched. ‘Surely this longstanding war of technological willy waving is over?'

Canon EOS 5Ds

For a long time in photography circles, there were two rival camps – those who swore by the versatility of the DSLR and image purists who lay their allegiance to the superior quality delivered by medium format cameras. The Canon EOS 5Ds could well be considered the bridge between the two.

Superb image quality; Excellent build; Familiar controls and layout

Produces large files; Only 5 frames per second; Limited ISO range
