Canon EOS 200D II Review: Small DSLRs Are Still A Thing

We review the EOS 200D II! The popularity of DSLRs has faded for quite some time now, especially with newer mirrorless cameras being just as capable (or even better) as their mirror-equipped siblings while offering a more compact build.

Canon EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D review

The EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D blends a number of tried-and-tested features with a mount that accepts an endless array of lenses, and its small size, battery life and general performance are all solid. It's only a minor, and frankly not very exciting, update to the Rebel SL2 / EOS 200D, but this is at least reflected in the modest premium over that model.

Excellent battery life; Great Dual Pixel CMOS AF system; Small, light body with good handling; Touch controls implemented well; LCD is very responsive;

Dated 9-point AF system; Awkwardly designed power control; 4K video crop and rolling shutter; Not a huge upgrade; Kit lens could be optically better

Canon EOS Rebel SL3 Review

Canon's smallest SLR, the SL2, receives a minor upgrade in the form of the SL3 ($599.99, body only). The new edition has a more modern image processor and support for 4K video, but doesn't offer a lot of other upgrades. It's a solid option, though not quite as compact as mirrorless alternatives—which cuts down on the argument for its size. If you prefer an optical viewfinder it's a good camera, though not quite as capable as our Editors' Choice, the Canon EOS Rebel T7i. Small, But Still an SLR The SL3 is one of the smallest SLRs you can buy, but it's still an SLR. It measures 3.7 by 4.8 by 2.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 15.8 ounces without a lens attached. It's a little bit smaller all around than the Nikon D3500 (3.9 by 4.9 by 2.8 inches, 12.9 ounces), but bigger than a typical mirrorless camera, like Canon's own EOS M50 (3.5 by 4.6 by 2.3 inches, 13.8 ounces). Canon sells the SL3 as a body only for around $600 or bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM for $749. If you buy...

The Canon EOS Rebel SL3 is one the smallest SLRs available, but its autofocus system struggles with fast-moving subjects.

Compact; Vari-angle touch LCD; 1080p video with good autofocus; External mic support; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

4K video shows heavy crop and choppy focus; Autofocus struggles with action; Not as capable as mirrorless alternatives

Canon EOS Rebel SL3 review

Canon has a new entry-level DSLR, and it hasn’t changed my opinion of such cameras. You’re better off with mirrorless. The EOS Rebel SL3 ($600 body only, $700 with a kit lens) continues the popular line of small-as-possible DSLRs that started with the SL1 in 2013, but does little to justify the camera’s existence in 2019. The SL3 aims to bring Canon’s entry-level DSLR up to par with its entry-level mirrorless camera, the EOS M50 — and go no further. The SL3 and M50 are differentiated only by their bodies, lens mounts, and viewfinders. On the inside, they are all but identical. And unless you really need an optical viewfinder or battery life that can last a week, the M50 is the better buy. The Rebel SL3 is a minor upgrade over the older SL2. It uses the same 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, though that’s certainly not something to complain about. It’s Canon’s best APS-C sensor, the same one used all the way up the product line to the EOS 80D. The processor has been upgraded to the Digic 8, bu...

Compact, lightweight; Friendly user interface and touch controls; Good image quality; Great battery life;

9-point viewfinder autofocus; 4K video has limitations; Many features are live view only;
