The EOS 100D would seem to confirm that, if somebody really wants what's loosely called a ‘serious camera', the D-SLR is still the first cab off the rank. And, consequently, it also confirms that the only really good viewfinder is an optical one. Hmm.

When looking at entry-level DSLR cameras, they all start to look the same after a while. Sure, camera manufacturers can add things like Wi-Fi capabilities and touchscreen LCDs, but those items don't change the look of these cameras.

Canon EOS 100D Review

Canon was late in entering the mirrorless camera market. When it did come out with the EOS M it faced some flak due to the slow autofocus speed. Although Canon did announce a firmware update to improve the AF speed in June this year, the damage was already done.

While the SL1 looks a lot like other EOS Rebel cameras at first glance, once you hold this model you'll notice the thing that sets the SL1 apart from its Rebel brethren -- its small size.
Pros:
  • Smaller size and lighter frame is definitely noticeable versus other DSLRs
  • Seems to have a sturdy feel and good build quality
  • SL1 remains easy to hold with well-sized right-hand grip
  • despite small camera body
  • Extremely fast performance in Viewfinder mode
  • Image quality is very good versus others...
Cons:
  • Having an articulated LCD would have been a nice feature
  • No built-in wireless capabilities
  • AF illuminator sometimes struggles in extreme low light situations
  • Slight changes in menus between Viewfinder and Live View modes may confuse some photographers
  • Battery life is below average versus other...

Canon EOS 100D review

The 18-megapixel EOS 100D is the literally smaller brother to the 700D sitting at the summit of Canon's APS-C sensor-based digital SLR range.
Pros:
  • Smaller and lighter build makes carrying DSLR body and lens less of a drag
  • yet more compact proportions haven't obviously compromised picture quality
Cons:
  • The lighter construction results in more obvious camera shake in lower light
  • no angle adjustable LCD plus a smaller handgrip than the 700D which costs just 50 quid more

Review: Canon EOS 100D

Having last year launched its first mirrorless-system camera – the EOS M – Canon seems determined to shrink its DSLR range, too. It's starting with the EOS 100D, which Canon claims is the smallest DSLR on the market.

Quick Review - Canon EOS 100D

If you are looking for the smallest, most portable Canon DSLR around, look no further – the EOS 100D admirably fits the bill. For many a photographer, foremost on their mind is the size and weight of the camera they intend toting with them everywhere.

Canon EOS Rebel SL1 Review

The Canon Rebel SL1 camera is the smallest DSLR model ever produced, but Canon still has created a model that compares favorably to larger DSLR cameras with plenty of advanced features.

First I'd like to thank Canon UK for the loan of an EOS 100D while I was recently in the UK. The EOS 100D and the EOS SL1 are identical, but if you look at the EXIF data in some of the images in this article you will see the camera recorded as the EOS 100D.
