Canon SL1

The Canon SL1 is the smallest and lightest DSLR that we've ever reviewed, delivering DSLR performance and image quality in a body that's almost as small as today's mirrorless camera models. Its features and image quality rival those of its bigger siblings, the Canon Rebel T4i and T5i.
Pros:
  • Extremely compact and lightweight for a DSLR
  • Delivers good image quality that's virtually identical to the Canon T4i/T5i
  • Accurate and relatively fast autofocus with improved Live View and Movie Hybrid CMOS II AF
  • Full 1080p HD movie recording
  • Better-than average kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6...
Cons:
  • Still not as compact as most mirrorless cameras
  • Slightly worse than average dynamic range and high ISO performance
  • Poor battery life, Despite its reduced size, body not as small as most compact system cameras because it still has to accommodate the DSLR mirror, LCD is not articulating (like it is...

The EOS 100D would seem to confirm that, if somebody really wants what's loosely called a ‘serious camera', the D-SLR is still the first cab off the rank. And, consequently, it also confirms that the only really good viewfinder is an optical one. Hmm.

While the SL1 looks a lot like other EOS Rebel cameras at first glance, once you hold this model you'll notice the thing that sets the SL1 apart from its Rebel brethren -- its small size.
Pros:
  • Smaller size and lighter frame is definitely noticeable versus other DSLRs
  • Seems to have a sturdy feel and good build quality
  • SL1 remains easy to hold with well-sized right-hand grip
  • despite small camera body
  • Extremely fast performance in Viewfinder mode
  • Image quality is very good versus others...
Cons:
  • Having an articulated LCD would have been a nice feature
  • No built-in wireless capabilities
  • AF illuminator sometimes struggles in extreme low light situations
  • Slight changes in menus between Viewfinder and Live View modes may confuse some photographers
  • Battery life is below average versus other...

Canon EOS Rebel ?SL1

Being a fan of all of the flagship cameras makes it painful for me to say that this is an unexciting offering from Canon's lower end consumer camera into the DSLR game. With Nikon and Sony releasing much more advanced consumer offerings, I often wonder what Canon is going to do to get out of this...
