Canon's EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM; An Ultra-Wide Zoom Digital APS-C Format Lens

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (16-35mm equivalent in 35mm parlance) was designed to cover the APS-C format, specifically the EOS 20D and both EOS Digital Rebels (plus future APS-C models). Canon's EF-S lenses (S = Short Back Focus) are physically matched to these cameras.

The superb distortion control means this can be a rewarding lens to use. However the sharpness has been a major disappointment for me. UWA lenses often have the foreground to the edge of the image where the lens is weakest, but even centre resolution isn't on a par with the price bracket.

Rectilinear with excellent distortion control, even at 10mm; Light and compact; Decent but not exceptional build quality; DPP lens profile completely eliminates

Price (though it has dropped below £500 recently so its less of an issue now); Not particularly sharp, even in the centre; More chromatic abberation than I expected at the price

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM review by Crepello

I photograph landscapes, buildings and occasionally do aerial photography and was looking forward to using this lens. Unlike many reviews on here, I have found this lens to produce poor image quality, especially around 10 mm and wide apertures.

lightweight; ultrawide capability

sharpness poor outside centre; especially in low light

This lense is a great investment for any budding landscape photographers, its wide angle allows you to cram so much into your picture. Its also fantastic for taking photos inside, giving your photos a great depth of field, ideal for real estate agents alike!.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM provides a full-frame equivalent of 16-35mm because Canon APS-C DSLRs have a 1.6x crop factor. But this is only a 1mm difference from DSLRs with a 1.5x crop factor.

Three aspherical lens elements, plus a Super-UD element, assure image quality. Its ring-type USM means fast and silent AF along with full-time manual focus. It focuses as close as 9.5 inches.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - Review / Test Report

The EF-S naming refers to S hort-back focus design which is only compatible to APS-C EOS SLRs starting with the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). EF-S lenses feature a protruding rear element which requires a special mirror design to avoid a collision of mirror and the rear part of the lens.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM review

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens was announced alongside the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM in August 2004. The EF-S 10-22mm finally provided Canon's budget and mid-range DSLRs with an ultra-wide angle option which until then was noticeably absent.

This lens is Canon's offering in the ultra wide zoom category for cropped sensor digital SLR cameras. As the only contender to exceed the 2:1 zoom ratio to date, we take a look at how it performs.

Good optical quality; Nice size and weight; No unexpected nasties

Price; Restricted fitting (Won't fit D30/60 or 10D; Lens hood is an optional extra
