Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Review

Most wideangle lenses of this type content themselves with a 2x zoom range, but Canon has managed to push the boundary just a little bit further with its 10-22mm zoom and has achieved a factor of 2.2x.

Extended zoom range

Lack of MTF consistency

Three aspherical lens elements, plus a Super-UD element, assure image quality. Its ring-type USM means fast and silent AF along with full-time manual focus. It focuses as close as 9.5 inches.

Wonderful ultra wide

I absolutely love this lens! Great for landscape/seascape, architecture and indoor photos. Since purchasing this lens last year it has never come off my 60D, lovely sharp and rich colors every time! A nice light but well built piece of glass!

I shoot this thing at 10mm all the time and most of the time i really like the images. It is not L quality but the UD lens does cut down on flare. I have had no issues with that. I have used in in many extreme environments and still works great. Must be attributed to the rear focusing system.

10mm on a crop; rear focus; front element doesn't rotate; often super crisp in the center; wide open images are sharp in the center

EF-S; chromatic aberrations in the corners

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - Review / Test Report

The EF-S naming refers to S hort-back focus design which is only compatible to APS-C EOS SLRs starting with the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). EF-S lenses feature a protruding rear element which requires a special mirror design to avoid a collision of mirror and the rear part of the lens.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM review

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens was announced alongside the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM in August 2004. The EF-S 10-22mm finally provided Canon's budget and mid-range DSLRs with an ultra-wide angle option which until then was noticeably absent.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens

The ‘EF-S' designation is Canon's way of labelling lenses with Short Back Focus, which indicates the distance between the sensor plane and the rear element of the lens is shorter than in an EF lens.
