Top quality, sharp, superb build

A fantastic lens. Everything you would expect from a L series lens. I have now taken around 3,000 photos using this lens on a 500D, mainly of kids playing sport. The focal length range is ideal. The build quality is great, it is as good today as when it came out of the box. Solid construction.
Pros:
  • Easy to use
  • Build quality

Purchased 70-300L for use on my 7D for daylight field sports, and most importantly, to carry while when traveling. Processed (in Lightroom & NIK Suite) images from the 7D + 70-300L compare very favorably with those from my 5D MkII + 70-200L MkII.
Pros:
  • Compact
  • Light weight
  • Fast auto focus (with both full and panning modes)
  • Full time manual focus
  • Very sharp images
  • Responds well to micro focus adjustment
Cons:
  • Cost, but then again it has 'L' build quality and performance
  • Lens collar is both expensive and (currently) unavailable

Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS Review

The Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS is a wonderful lens. It's made mostly of alloy; even its filter threads are metal.

Great glass!!

It is not my primary lens, and that is why it only got a 4star (my favourite lenses are always shorter - 50mm for example) but it still great glass. It does get a little heavy for continuous shooting, especially with the heavier camera bodies, but is perfect to shoot people with from a distance at...
Pros:
  • Consistent Output
  • Durable
  • Easily Interchangeable
  • Easy to get the hang of
  • Nice Bokeh
  • Strong Construction
Cons:
  • Challenge to spot subject
  • Heavy

Superb build quality, superb images

CANON EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM review. As a dedicated nature photographer much of my shooting is with wide angle lenses but I recently decided I wanted a telephoto zoom for wildlife, particularly birds. My criteria were: Min.

Amazing Lens and great photos

Love using this lens. It really has increased my overall use of my DSLR. I am able to take photos from a distance and really capture a natural shot since I don't have to be close to the object. Overall I am very happy with this lens. Would recommend to any starter using a DSLR.
Pros:
  • Durable
  • Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • Strong Construction
Cons:
  • Heavy

Great overlooked lens

"In this zoom range there are many lenses to compare and it wasn't an easy decision. For me it came down to this lens or the 70-200 f/4 L IS USM and after trying both in the store I went with the 70-300 .

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens Review

Handling and features Performance Verdict Specification Canon have given the 70-300mm range an L-series makeover and as a result this lens sports silent autofocus, with full-time manual override, weather sealing, optical stabilisation and tougher build quality than you might normally find on a lens...
Pros:
  • Excellent build quality
  • Very good sharpness that is consistent through the range
  • Low CA
  • Low distortion
  • Effective optical stabilisation
Cons:
  • May seem expensive for a f/4-5.6 zoom (although the premium is probably worth the extra in this case

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM review by Apricane

This lens is simply awesome. It checks every box in the image quality department: it is sharp, has good contrast, essentially normal distortion for such a long zoom, and very little to no chromatic aberration (that I could notice on the shots I took so far).
Pros:
  • Sharp as hell
  • good contrast
  • hefty
  • quick and accurate AF
  • pleasing bokeh
Cons:
  • A tad slow
  • comparatively heavy
  • sizeable
  • and somewhat expensive
