Beyond Expectations

I had been told this is one of the best lenses made so I was expecting a lot. It delivered and then some. My first experience with the 300 was at a horse show in which my daughter was competing. The pace of the action in a cluttered arena puts a premium on rapid, precise auto focusing.

Fantastic lens despite the price in the UK

As I needed to replace some general purpose zoom lenses with those of a more standard telephoto lens, this was just one of several that I purchased to help with my bucket list was full and my cancer finally killed me. I have not regretted the decision nor the high cost.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens - BRAND NEW review

Where the original Canon 300mm ƒ/2.8 IS USM was very good, Canon's refinements have made it even better. If you're looking to buy, it doesn't get any better than this, but then, you probably already guessed that.

Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM review by jo-1

What can be written about the latest incarnation of the 300 f/22.8 that haven't been done elsewhere? I bought one of the 1st lenses in Germany (reason for the high price tag) and use it ever since almost purely was a walk around lens. Either in Venice or for wildlife on my FF camera.
Pros:
  • • excellent sharpness
  • • comparably lightweight
  • • more shallow DOF compare to the 70-200 f/2.8
  • • more concentration on the subject
  • • built like a tank
  • • fits in my photo (air cabin) bag opposite to the 600 and 600 ds
Cons:
  • • none (the lens is perfectly matching my expectations in every respect

I was looking to an optically and mechanically optimized lens with a large aperture and multipurpose usability. Combined with the 1.4x and 2x extenders this lens plays in his own class. Even with the 2x Extender it is razor sharp.
Pros:
  • sharp wide open
  • even in the corner of the frame excellent AF speed on my 5D II
  • fastest AF of all lenses I've ever tested gorgeous bokeh
  • very smooth and extremely pleasing
  • comparable to the 135 f/2.0 lightweight compare to all other options in the market
  • especially compare to the...
Cons:
  • price - that's the only shortcoming I can detect
  • maybe the light shade could be a bit smaller for saving packing space but for that purpose I am building my own light shade
