A big cons is the lack of IS but not for macro work, for portraits. Only for macro is just perfect.
excellent IQ
some focus hunting in low light

Most users won't be disappointed – though sharpness is average, fringing control is top notch.
Excellent build quality; first-rate chromatic aberration control; USM
Average sharpness; expensive
Great sharp images
No image stabliser Need a tripod
This lens is the more modest cousin of ‘s version, which includes both ( ) and ( ) glass. It might therefore be expected to deliver a fairly ordinary performance, but that is not the case.
Ultra-reliable focussing
Wide-open non-macro MTF is poor
I required two lenses: a macro and a long portrait lens. I did not have the budget for both but have been blown away by the quality of this lens in both areas for a very modest price.
Super-sharp images
Slow auto-focus
Released in March 2000, this lens manages to offer most of the features you'd expect in its price bracket. Constructed with 12 elements in 8 groups, the focusing system is the internal type, meaning the front element remains fixed in position and doesn't extend or rotate.
I've had this lens for many years now being used on my 60D THE PROS: The image quality is spectacular. Everything is very crisp above f/3.5. f/2.8 is nice but the DOF is way too shallow and the parts that are in focus are not as crisp.
We bought this used and it was supposed to be in "very good" condition. Definitely wouldn't consider that to be the case here. The main ring is loose and the lens looks like it has had a lot of use. The listing claimed it came with both the front and rear caps, which it did.
I had earlier problems with focus, but now my biggest gripe is no lens hood supplied, and Canons tripod ring mountfor this lens, is far dearer than other brands ([*]I`d expect). I have one of these and it works very well, cost me all of $11.00 australian. from Hong Kong of course.
Durable; Nice Bokeh; Strong Construction
Lens Creep; Poor in Low Light
I also have the 100 400 L , but for Macro this is the most fantastic lens I have ever owned.
