Released in March 2000, this lens manages to offer most of the features you'd expect in its price bracket. Constructed with 12 elements in 8 groups, the focusing system is the internal type, meaning the front element remains fixed in position and doesn't extend or rotate.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 is an excellent medium-small lens, intended to be used for Macro photography. With its 1:1 reproduction ratio, it is capable of focusing at objects of all sizes. It is a versatile lens with great ergonomics and delivers amazing results.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM ($599.99 direct) is a telephoto lens for Canon cameras that can focus close enough to capture objects with true 1:1 magnfiication. It is adequately sharp, even at its maximum aperture, but does suffer from some optical issues in certain high-contrast situations.

Prone to color fringing; Lens hood not included.

Good for sunny conditions, basically

I've had this lens for many years now being used on my 60D THE PROS: The image quality is spectacular. Everything is very crisp above f/3.5. f/2.8 is nice but the DOF is way too shallow and the parts that are in focus are not as crisp.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM review by marduk360

Very sharp and fast/accurate AF. Focusing is very silent too. The focusing ring has a smooth feel to it, but somehow feels a bit too loose (imo only). The build quality is very good despite the material used. Feels solid but light for its size. Only gripe is that there is no Tripod Ring included....

Sharp; Fast and accurate AF; Lightweight without feeling cheap

No Tripod ring; HIS (regular IS would have sufficed

We bought this used and it was supposed to be in "very good" condition. Definitely wouldn't consider that to be the case here. The main ring is loose and the lens looks like it has had a lot of use. The listing claimed it came with both the front and rear caps, which it did.

lens is as sharp as canon says,

I had earlier problems with focus, but now my biggest gripe is no lens hood supplied, and Canons tripod ring mountfor this lens, is far dearer than other brands ([*]I`d expect). I have one of these and it works very well, cost me all of $11.00 australian. from Hong Kong of course.

Durable; Nice Bokeh; Strong Construction

Lens Creep; Poor in Low Light

If you want to jump into macro photography making compromise in image quality, this lens is the perfect choice, here is why: - Very good image quality, L rated. - Nice build quality. - A joy to use the very large focusing ring. - Pretty good for portrait too.

A bargain; sharp image; build quality; large and nice focusing ring

maybe a bit heavy

Awesome, AWESOME

It does just what a Macro should. 1:1 with perfect quality. Quiet focus but noisy when REALLY close up. Fantastic as a portrait lens as well as a Macro. Feels a little light for me but I'm old fashioned.

Everything

Lens shade would be nice
