In a series which has essentially become an annual celebration of war's Greatest Hits of the West, it was only a matter of time before a Call Of Duty title turned its iron sights towards the paranoia-gripped Cold War era of the late 1960s.

As a reviewer, I try hard to avoid hyperbole, but it's difficult not to call Black Ops the 'best Call of Duty ever' simply because it's the ultimate refinement of the franchise formula.

Treyarch steps up to the plate with their latest installment in the Call of Duty series. Can it keep the lineup fresh and exciting, or will this one blow over like the cold war era it's based on?

I wasn't incredibly impressed with Treyarch's last outing in the Call of Duty universe, World at War , and followed their latest effort, Call of Duty: Black Ops with mere professional curiosity. Even after a closed-doors showing at E3 2010, I kept my distance. As I see it, I owe Treyarch mad props.

While it holds more first week sales than any other game before it, Black Ops isn't the series' high point. What we have here is a refined and extremely confident product from a studio that has found its feet in the FPS world.
