If you are unsure how to pronounce the brand name Bvlgari, it is probably because you may not realize they are using the traditional Latin alphabet. Pronounced bull-gary, its name is taken from its founder, Sotirios Bulgaris, who created the company all of the way back in 1884. Because it is a popular contemporary brand, many do not realize it has origins in the 19th century, and that even then it was a luxury brand.
Today, it is noted for its high quality watches, beautiful jewellery, accessories, signature fragrances, and even a chain of luxury hotels.
Born in a small Greek Village, Bulgaris began his professional life as a jeweller, and eventually made his way to Rome. He had established a storefront in his hometown and had already been working as a professional throughout his years in Italy. Within a few years of his arrival in Rome he opened a shop in a popular area of the city. His success was such that he changed locations in 1905 and two of his sons came on board with the firm.
They were remarkably good at maintaining the business, even through the turmoil of WWII. But it was the grandson of the founder of the Bvlgari firm that really created a globally recognized brand. Gianni Bulgaris took over the firm upon the death of his father in 1966, and as the grandson of the original Bulgaris, he started opening shops in very upscale markets, including Monte Carlo, Paris, Geneva and New York. By the late 1970s, the firm was re-energized and the team was focused on developing the watch segment and firmly establishing the Bvlgari brand.
In the 1980s, the company relied on one of its subsidiaries for watch production. During that time it created a system through which it created its own parts, which are still in use today.
Throughout this entire time, the distinctive Bvlgari style was being refined, and often copied. From its origins and up until today, the aesthetic of the firm has emphasized bold colours, architectural lines and forms, hefty and large gold features, and many large coloured stones. Additionally, every single watch that the firm makes is given its own identification number that the company records for perpetuity.
With subsequent generations of Bulgaris family members taking over leadership, the firm diversified and enhanced its reputation as a truly luxurious one. By 1995, it had grown to such an extent that it went public and experienced explosive growth.
Today, Bvlgari remains a boutique brand that is available in roughly 300 signature stores, but also through a range of distributors around the globe.
As a known label of high quality jewellery, watches, accessories, fragrances and even hotels, it makes an ever-changing array of products available. Currently, the company has:
As a brand of distinction, known for its great style and beautiful aesthetics, Bvlgari is a truly fashionable choice. Whether you prefer their watches, scents, jewellery or even their upscale hotels, it is a label that translates to quality and beauty.
