BlackBerry Torch 9860 review: BlackBerry Torch 9860

With a large, responsive touchscreen and a powerful processor, the BlackBerry Torch 9860 looks like a great bit of hardware. We do have reservations about the software, though. The BlackBerry Torch 9860 is a touchscreen-only handset, from a manufacturer famous for making smart phones with Qwerty keyboards. Can it possibly be any cop?
Pros:
  • 3.7-inch touchscreen
  • 1.2GHz processor
  • 720p video recording.
Cons:
  • BlackBerry 7 OS could struggle to compete with Android and iOS.

Blackberry Torch 9860

This is not the first attempt by BlackBerry to produce a full touchscreen phone as they had a similar idea with the earlier Storm models. The Torch 9860 is a far superior effort in the touchscreen arena than the Storm series however and benefits from all of the excellent web browsing, multimedia and...

BlackBerry Torch 9860 review Review

The BlackBerry Torch 9860 certainly represents RIM's most successful touchscreen phone yet. It's a solid and likeable handset. But the high standard of the competition and the relative shortage of compatible apps mean you should be certain it's the phone for you before parting with your cash.
Pros:
  • 3.7-inch touchscreen
  • 1.2GHz processor
  • 720p video recording
Cons:
  • BlackBerry 7 OS could struggle to compete with Android and iOS

BlackBerry Torch 9860

Research In Motion (RIM) has taken a baby-steps approach to entering the touchscreen smartphone market, with its first two attempts, the Storm and Storm 2, sporting clickable displays followed up by the Torch 9800 and 9810 with slideout keyboards.
Pros:
  • Smart design
  • Good display and hardware features
  • Surprisingly nippy despite single core processor
Cons:
  • Interface still a bit stark
  • Keyboard not as good as competition
  • App store still not well stocked

BlackBerry Torch 9860 Review

RIM did make heavy weather of the task of mastering the touchscreen experience. For a completely touch based phone, that is. With the Storm 2 being the prime example of how things went wrong. But from what I have experienced with the Torch 9860, RIM has finally worked it out. Sleeeeek!
Pros:
  • Sleek form factor with classy build quality
  • Very good display
  • Touch response is quite sure
  • Power package ensures OS 7 is smooth
Cons:
  • Keypad doesn't really work in portrait mode
  • Web browser has some bugs

BlackBerry Torch 9860

The BlackBerry Torch 9860 is a 3.7-inch touchscreen smartphone, sweeping aside the Storm name to give RIM another crack at a keyboardless device. It arrives with BlackBerry OS7, the same as the BlackBerry Bold 9900 which we reviewed recently, but offering a large screen BlackBerry experience.
Pros:
  • Good screen
  • good camera and mostly good design
Cons:
  • Software freezes and a lack of app compatibility takes the shine off this handset
