BlackBerry DTEK50 review

The BlackBerry DTEK50 is a good phone. Above average, even. But we can't fully recommend it because of the way BlackBerry is marketing it. The perhaps incorrect status quo is that people don't want to worry about security; they just want a phone that works.

The BlackBerry DTEK50 will be priced at $300 in the US, and will be available unlocked, and can be used with AT&T and T-Mobile. There you have it for this in-depth look at the BlackBerry DTEK50! $300 is relatively cheap, especially if you want a smartphone that prioritizes security.
Pros:
  • Good
  • albeit very familiar
  • design Lots of useful software features Security is a big priority MicroSD card slot
Cons:
  • Lackluster camera Disappointing gaming performance less than average battery life Only 16 GB of internal storage

BlackBerry's second attempt at an Android smartphone lacks the ambition of last year's Priv, but don't get hung up on that. The DTEK50 is a solidly built device with a super-secure foundation, and the company's take on Android continues to impress.

BlackBerry DTEK50

BlackBerry has seen its influence rapidly decrease over the past few years, but I retain a soft spot for the company's devices. I was a fan of BlackBerry's first Android phone: the Priv may have been rather big and bulky, but it benefited from clever software features and a nice-ish keyboard.
Pros:
  • Nice screen
  • Useful software
  • Secure approach
Cons:
  • Poor battery life
  • Dull design
  • Really slow

BlackBerry DTEK50 review: An Android phone with a BlackBerry logo

In a crowded mid-range smartphone market, the DTEK50 doesn't stand out. It's a $300 phone that feels like a $200 one. The new BlackBerry DTEK50 is sold as a BlackBerry phone that will make your personal information incredibly secure.
Pros:
  • The BlackBerry DTEK50 is a slim, lightweight phone that's easy to use with a single hand
  • BlackBerry's software tweaks mostly improve the Android experience.
Cons:
  • The camera struggles in low light
  • performance is a bit lacking
  • and BlackBerry's security claims are seriously overblown.

Cheap and secure, but still very nice to use

I pre-ordered the DTEK50 as a replacement for my iPhone 6 (which was a temporary replacement for my broken Galaxy S6). I wanted better than your typical Android security and this offers a lot more security-minded features than mentioned in the review.
Pros:
  • Form factor
  • price
  • security
  • Hub
  • Productivity Tab
  • speakers
  • display
Cons:
  • Battery life is good
  • but not quite what I expected from BB

BlackBerry DTEK50 review

The BlackBerry DTEK50 is the world's most secure Android smartphone. So says the Canadian firm at least. It's a compelling claim too, as concern over personal security on mobile devices has never been higher – and the DTEK50 looks to play on that insecurity in people's minds by offering solid specs...

With a better camera and CPU, the DTEK50 could have been a mid-range best-buy. Instead, it's going to mostly appeal to the business segment, who favors security and productivity features. Regular users will look past it and to alternatives that offer improved everyday features for the same price.

BlackBerry DTEK50 review: secure, but not special

Last year BlackBerry launched the Priv, its first-ever Android smartphone. The Priv represented another attempt by BlackBerry to reinvent itself for the modern mobile era and build something worthy of competing with Apple, Samsung, and other smartphone makers.
Pros:
  • Monthly security updates
  • Near-stock Android software
  • Nice display and speakers
Cons:
  • Unimpressive performance
  • Weak camera
  • Poor battery life
