I'm conflicted about Battle Chasers: Nightwar, and that's not something I was planning on saying about the Kickstarter-funded throwback RPG. As a longtime fan of the comic series it's based on, a continuation of the Battle Chasers story seemed unlikely, and that's putting it politely.

At first glance, it seems like Battle Chasers: Nightwar might just collapse under the weight of its own ambitious complexities.

This game is beautiful and, at least initially, wonderfully enjoyable to play. However, the balance in this game later on makes it really difficult to have fun with and this coming from someone who absolutely LOVES JRPG games.

Great game, but as of patch 1.01 it's very buggy. Crashed 20+ times since I got it in 30 hours of playtime so far. But i'm sure they are working on a new patch to address that. Also, it says it's "PS4 Pro Enhanced" on the back of the box, but there are no enhancements on my PS4 Pro and 4K TV, so...

Battle Chasers is adapted from a comic series of the same name. It's nine issues long and I can't recommend it highly enough if you haven't read it. You control a band of adventurers from disparate backgrounds who share a penchant for trouble.

Graphics capture the source material beautifully; Combat is punishing yet rewarding; Excellent soundtrack

Inadvertently, I discovered after a blindingly large session of Battle Chasers: Nightwar that I'd sunk in 70.8 hours of game-time. The game told me this and I was somewhat shocked. I mean it's addictive, but I had no idea just how addictive.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar is very much like the PlayStation JRPGs that it is influenced by. There are elements from Final Fantasy , Suikoden , and even some Diablo . It is a shining example of why people love turn-based RPGs, thanks to the emphasis on character building, management and strategy.
