I hold myself to the personal standard of trying to finish nearly every game that I review. Not only does that give me the fullest possible perspective in most cases, but it illustrates how fundamentally broken a game would need to be for me to throw in the towel early.

I think I found some sort of sick pleasure in reading about how broken and buggy the new Assassin's Creed was and kept thinking some really dark thoughts to myself about how I would slate the game in the review.

There might be some things about Unity to like for those looking to relive the Ezio Auditore-led days of Assassin's Creed II , but otherwise, it marks a return to a darker time better left behind.

The 'Assassin's Creed' series has come a long way since its humble beginnings seven years ago. At the heart of the gameplay is a parkour movement system that allows the player to climb, jump, slide, and swim through dense urban environments.

Not the bold new reinvention that Assassin's Creed needed but instead a rushed, patently unfinished mess whose improvements are minor and failings more obvious than ever.

The open-ended assassination missions, which are after all the core of the game, are handled pretty well; Amazing graphics, if they're not glitching out at the time

The parkour, combat, and stealth are still extremely simplistic and frequently very dull; Mountains of often very serious bugs; Dull story and characters; Less features than previous games

This year marks the release of not just one, but two Assassin's Creed games. Unity marks Ubisoft's first foray into next-gen territory, as the game is only available on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Those issues can undoubtedly be fixed by a patch somewhere down the road, but that patch seems unlikely to fix Unity's biggest flaw: it's just not very much fun. For all its hugeness and graphical splendor, Unity is starved for excitement.
