It’s been a whirlwind few years for Amazon and its smart devices, as well as for its smart assistant. With the proliferation of Alexa in all kinds of devices, support has pushed the assistant to grow increasingly self-sufficient, lessening the need for additional hubs with Echo devices. So, by its third generation, is the Echo Dot truly all you need?Design ImageTagInstance gallery-0a5c77a4-8616-4c4d-aca2-2...

Inexpensive, currently selling for $30 alone and even less in bundles; Best audio among mini smart speakers, 3.5mm jack and Bluetooth to supplement; Backed by Amazon’s leading, largest skill and device library; More refined home décor look compared to previous generation;

Axing microUSB power makes device and plug more proprietary; Alexa still lags behind Google Assistant in answering a broader set of queries and doing so more accurately;

Tinny

I purchased 4 of these for around the house and now regret it. I have the Amazon Echo in my kitchen and wanted the echo dots to go in the kids bedrooms. When they play their music it sounds tinny, I wish I had just bought the Amazon Echo as I have no issues with that.

The Echo Dot is a great buy for the price point!

Bought this as a gift, and its great. The music function is fun (Alexa, play Jack Johnson, or Alexa play Smooth Jazz or whatever) and ridiculously convenient. We also ask the weather, random questions, and play occasional games. Sound quality is very good for such a small unit! Love this.

GOOD, BUT NOT GREAT

I bought the Amazon Echo Dot 3 a few weeks ago and use it in our Sun Lounge paired with a Sonos Play 5 speaker. It works pretty well, although it has lost wi-fi connection once already. My Alexa View has had no such problem in 2 years. Nevertheless it works well and is fairly unobtrusive.

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) Review

Nowadays, there is no shortage of Amazon Echo devices that come with a number of features and sometimes at a cost. One of the most recent devices is the Echo Dot (3rd Gen) which is one of the cheapest Echo devices and a vast improvement over the previous version.

Cheaper than comparable smart speakers (i.e Google Home Mini; Nice fabric design; Has Bluetooth and AUX out; Great sound; Easy to setup

Comes with a much larger power adapter than the previous version; Alexa has some trouble hearing

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Generation) Review

Amazon's third-generation Echo Dot ($49) looks good and sounds great. With vastly improved audio, it's now a distinctly better smart speaker than the Google Home Mini, and can replace the larger $99 Echo for less picky folks. That makes it our Editor's Choice for entry-level smart speakers. If you already own an old Echo Dot and use it to power a bigger, better speaker, there's no need to upgrade. But if you use your Echo Dot as a primary speaker, you'll want the new one.A Cuddlier Dot The Echo Dot is chubbier and cuddlier than the previous model, although it's about the same size. Instead of just hard plastic, now the speaker has a fabric wrap in one of three shades of gray. Choose wisely, because unlike with the full-sized Echo, you can't change the wrapping after you buy the speaker. Like previous Echo Dots, the speaker has a colored light ring around the edge and four buttons on top: volume buttons, a mic mute, and an action button. I like the Echo Dot's volume buttons better ...

The new Amazon Echo Dot delivers dramatically improved sound, making it an even better buy for an entry-level Alexa speaker.

Much better sound than previous model; Still the best inexpensive Alexa speaker; 3.5mm jack for more powerful speakers; Alexa remains the best voice ecosystem for smart home control

Alexa isn't up to Google Assistant's level at answering broad information queries
