When it was released back in 1999, Age of Empires II was one of the finest real-time strategy games ever made. It is still to be found on many all-time top 50 game lists, including my own.

The Age of Empires series stands as the perfect example of how to make learning fun. These unique RTS titles combine actual history; with stuff kids loved (murdering things). Each campaign in the series follows a great historical figure and their story about how they changed history forever.

While a full-fledged sequel followed in 2005, many people still consider Age of Empires II to be the definitive edition. A Bygone Era

Age of Empires makes use of the isometric semi-3D viewpoint that we all know and love. The graphics are fairly well detailed, even by today's standards, and the game even supports changing resolutions up to 1024x768. The various units and buildings look prerendered, like most games of the sort.

When you encounter a wild wolf, alligator or tiger, you can dance around attacks and retaliate with quick thrusts from a spear. You can also build furniture, cook mushrooms and go fishing. Really, there's no shortage of ways to pass the time. The problem is that you mostly don't have time for them.

All this construction and destruction takes place on a well-designed set of maps. The terrain in the game is well done and quite varied, with woods, deserts, grasslands, shallows, water, and deep water, as well as actual hills in addition to the standard cliffs.
