It's been twelve years since the last Ace Combat release and Skies Unknown feels like nothing has changed - and I don't mean that dismissively. Everything that makes these games such a personal joy to play, from sheer number of planes to fly to an overwrought and melodramatic story, has been updated...

While I don't think Ace Combat 7 is for everyone I did genuinely enjoy my time with it. It's also about the only flight simulator game on consoles, so it has that going for it. The action is good and dynamic, it looks beautiful, and there are some good twists on the formula.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown review

Air-superiority complex

Loads of content; Great mission variety; Air combat is immensely satisfying; VR mode is exceptional

Occasional difficulty spikes; Story pacing is a bit clunky

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (PS4)

Assault Horizon felt like a simplified version of Ace Combat to chase the big FPS money of COD and Battlefield, but Skies Unknown is proof that the...

Intense; varied action; Looks and sounds great; VR mode is incredible

Fighting drones isn't always satisfying; Can be quite unforgiving; More VR missions; please

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown review – flying high

The only combat flight simulator left on consoles reinvents itself as one of the most unique action games around.

Excellent controls and combat, with plenty of options for both veterans and newbies; Fantastic graphics, promising multiplayer, and plenty of content; One of the best VR experiences ever

There are still unavoidable problems with variety in mission design; The plot is both confusing and not very interesting; No squad commands and ungenerous checkpointing

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

The Ace Combat series, which came along in 1995, offered something great. It made the control of super-technological fighters extremely amusing and accessible. If you have approached a flight simulator like Falcon 4 or a hybrid game like Jane's USAF, you have certainly had to deal with long learning...

Great Ace Combat Game

I was delighted to play this again as the last genuine Ace Combat was on the PS2 (Unless you had an Xbox....and even that was 10 years ago). The gameplay has had subtle improvements and the graphics are simply wonderful.

Amazing game, a must for VR

This game is amazing!! I'll start off there and tell you why. For anyone that has played ace combat before, you'll appreciate this 1. Improved graphics, excellent gameplay, dogfights don't just seem like the same repetitive battles over and over. Lots of variety with missions. Then there's VR mode.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Review – A Short Flight But Sky-High Air Combat

Over the past week, I've soared above the clouds and touched the face of God; I've rained death down on enemies from above; I've flown the fast-lane on a highway to the danger zone. Ok, I'm exaggerating a bit – I've actually been sitting on my couch wearing sweatpants with a controller in my hands.

Fun aerial combat; Nice balance between action and realism; VR mode is thrilling

A bit repetitive; Campaign could be longer
