Sony has been kind enough to show off the brand new designs of its soon-to-be-released PlayStation 5 console. If early impressions are anything to go by, straight lines are out and curves are in. There is a very different look to this gaming icon.

The PS5 design is curved instead of the squarish look we're all used to. The colour scheme is a cool white exterior and black centre for both of the models on early display: one with a 4K Blu-ray disc drive and a digital-only version which is obviously a more streamlined device with the absence of the disc drive.

Games were also capturing plenty of attention at the pre-release show. There's plenty to look forward to with new releases in franchises like Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, NBA 2K, Hitman, and Oddworld being teased. Sony also stated that Grand Theft Auto V will be coming to PS5, while a new standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online will be given away with the console, but membership of PlayStation Plus will still be required to claim this bonus.

Enhancements to hardware, VR and graphics are being kept under wraps. Some suggest Sony are keen to keep the highlight on design and games at the moment, with others speculating that big announcements about improvements in these key areas will be made just prior to launch later in the year to ramp up interest in PlayStation 5 even more.

PS5 availability and pricing

This new console is currently available for preorder at major NZ retailers for as low as $649 for the digital edition console. Shipments start on the 12th of November in New Zealand.
