: The best portrait lens you can get your hands on right now for Sony's FE mount is this one. You won't look back.

I am an architectural photographer who has been using the a7R for the last year + using my Canon lenses with an adaptor and have been very pleased with the results. I was on the fence about the new a7RII when I heard about it because the a7R really has done a great job for me.

Sony's a7R II is a top shot among full-frame mirrorless cameras

Comparing the cameras in Sony's a7 full-frame interchangeable lens mirrorless camera series can be confusing. For one thing, the models have similar names like a7 II, a7S and a7R. Each of the models also has its own strengths. The latest Sony a7R II still sounds a mouthful.

Sony Alpha 7R II

Sony doesn't pull any punches with its second-generation Alpha 7R . The 7R II ($3,199.99, body only) ups its full-frame sensor resolution to 42 megapixels, and it uses a back side-illuminated (BSI) design to keep the low-light performance of its high-res sensor strong.

Excellent 42-megapixel image sensor; Superb high ISO imaging; In-body image stabilization; 5fps continuous shooting; Hybrid autofocus system; Hinged rear display; Excellent EVF; Dust- and moisture-resistant design; 4K video capture

Expensive; Omits PC sync socket; Overly sensitive eye sensor; No built-in flash

Sony a7R II Review

This was released on December 18, 2015. Since that version I have not experienced any overheating problems when shooting documentary/event 4k video with the A7RII.

Camera Review: Sony A7R II

Digital devices often look good on paper but don't always follow through to meet the promises of their specifications. Not so with the Sony a7R II , which is chock full of features, technology and performance enhancements that held real promise when first announced.

Excellent image quality; extensive feature set; 5-axis image stabilization; fast and accurate AF; good noise performance at high ISOs

Relatively slow buffer clearing; slow start-up; rolling shutter in 4K crop mode; pricey

Sony has turned a lot of heads with the introduction of the Alpha 7R II. It brought so many new features that on the day of announcement, many of us in the office were already thinking 'take my money' - and that was only halfway through the feature list announcement.

Class-leading low light Raw performance; thanks to the first-ever BSI full-frame CMOS; Impressive dynamic range in Raw; even at high ISO; Dramatically improved JPEGs; with sophisticated sharpening and well-controlled noise reduction; DRO and S-Log2 offer extensive dynamic range in JPEG; IBIS and...

No direct AF point control; Lock-on AF still remains unpredictable and often unreliable; Camera focuses stopped down in AF-C; often crippling AF at small apertures or in low light; Eye-AF and Lock-on AF not available with 3rd party lenses; nor in video; Subject tracking in video is poor; while the...
