A £1600 phone sends our scepticism into overdrive. You could buy a Fiat Seicento with 30,000 miles on the clock and only mild kerb damage for that sort of money. And you’d still have change left over to buy a couple of big-screen budget phones. So we don’t think all that many people should buy a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. But we can’t deny it offers an experience different to any standard smartphone. It’s not the same as having a phone and a tablet, either. There’s no doubling up or looking daft tapping on a 10in screen on the Tube. And Samsung has done a fantastic job of making an unusual phone that rapidly starts to feel normal. Sure, it’s heavy and thick, but the narrow frame deserves a chef’s kiss. No company is doing as much as Samsung to try and make foldable phones a realistic proposition for ordinary people. While we’re not quite there yet, phones like the Z Fold 3 prove there’s more to foldables than just a hugely expensive gimmick.

The Z Fold 3 is water-resistant, more durable, $500 more affordable than its predecessor, has two good 120Hz refresh rate displays, a top-of-the-line processor, 12GB of RAM, and a user interface that is near perfect.

I think Speck did a splendid job on presenting a clear durable case for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Its easy to attach and keeps the identity of the colorway you chosen. It feels good in hand and doesn’t add much weight to the Z Fold 3 which is a huge plus.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a genuine technological marvel from Samsung. The South Korean firm has improved almost everything with its third-generation folding tablet-phone hybrid. It is faster, smoother, has much improved software, better cameras, a more reliable fingerprint scanner and is £200 cheaper...

Pros: a phone and tablet in one, water resistance, useful split-screen apps, great cover screen, fantastic tablet screen, top performance, good battery life, good cameras, head-turning design, S Pen support.

Cons: very expensive, no 5x optical zoom camera, internal screen can be marked more easily than traditional glass, heavy, thick.

If you’re sold on the perks of the foldable concept, though, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is its best proponent yet.
