Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G Review

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G ($484.95 direct)($376.95 at Amazon) is the company's most recent standard-angle D-SLR lens. It offers improvements over previous versions, including improved coatings, and an internal focus motor, but it eliminates the aperture ring so you won't be able to use it on older manual focus 35mm cameras. Full-frame Nikon shooters will appreciate its classic standard-angle field of view, and it works equally well as a short telephoto portrait lens when paired with an APS-C Nikon SLR. The lens is an excellent performer with sharpness that is excellent at f/1.4 and off the charts as you stop down, easily earning it our Editors' Choice award for standard-angle prime SLR lenses. Typically, 50mm lenses are rather compact when compared with wide-angle or telephoto SLR lenses, and this Nikkor lens is no exception. It measures just 2.1 by 2.9 inches (HD) and weighs a mere 9.9 ounces. A lens hood is included—it twists via a bayonet and adds some height to the le...

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G is a fast-aperture standard-angle lens for Nikon D-SLRs. It's tack sharp, even at f/1.4, and earns our Editors' Choice award.

Extremely sharp; Fast aperture; Reasonable price tag

No aperture control ring; No vibration reduction

Amazing Lens. Highly recommend for all folks who invest in a good NikonDSLR

Absolutely fantastic from every angle. A Must have portrait lens for DSLR enthusiasts. The bokeh is just tremendeus. This has now become my daily shoot lens for all sort of photographs. It is crisp and photos are super sharp. This lens also allows you to keep the camera in a case much smaller.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f1.4G

Zoom lenses are all very well, but while they're certainly sharp enough, they lack the distortion and aberration control found in older prime lenses. More than that, though, they have much smaller maximum apertures.

Autofokusen kunde kanske vart lite snabbare

Below Expectations

Pass on this 50mm. There are better/smarter choices.

Good optics; well built

Not class leading yet priced that way; slow AF-S

This is the only prime lens I bought so far, and I'm very glad I got it. I highly recommend this investment. The lens kit at the same focal length looks so cheap compared to this one! I think I found my lens, and I will remove it from the body only when I REALLY NEED to.

You Definitely Want This Lens

This lens has exceeded all my expectations. It should be in everybody's bag. The pictures obtained with this lens are razor sharp, and the bokeh is amazing. Buy this lens!

Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor review by photospots

A very sharp lens which is very sharp and creates great bokeh if you use it as a portrait lens or other places where bokeh is important. But you should consider buying the 50mm 1.8g which is cheaper, but has almost the same picture quality.

very sharp; great bokeh

could have better autofocus speed

A sharp, light weight lens which is great for portraits.

This is a prime lens with I bought to use in low light conditions and also for the shallow depth of field so the subject is in focus and the background is blurred. When using the shallow depth of field, I have found it useful to set the focus point manually ( check the camera manual for how to do...
