An affordable Android phone

The Huawei Ideos X5 is an Android smartphone that has a lot to offer for a small price tag. EYE-CATCHING: The first thing you notice is the large 3.8in screen, which dominates the front of Huawei Ideos X5.

Affordable; 4GB memory; decent 5-megapixels camera

No dedicated camera button; microSD slot hidden under back casing

Huawei IDEOS X5

We've already reviewed the smart Red Bull Mobile HD , but sans all the Red Bull bells and whistles, it's actually Huawei's U8800 IDEOS X5. We take the X5 for a spin to find out how it fares in the continuously expanding budget-friendly Android range.

Very good and large display; good specs for budget device; pocket- and grip-friendly dimensions; 4 GB of storage

Unprotected camera lens sticks out of the rear cover; camera lag; Android Froyo not the most up to date version of the mobile OS; and not the most affordable of the budget conscious Android group

Don't Think twice....

I have held a few android phones, this is the first i own though. the features are awesome. no lags, no reboots..in short no issues. and for basic use, battery is good. no compatibility issues. i was scared to buy a outlying brand, but just take my word for it.

"Huawei Ideos X5: Big Screen For A Lite Phone"

In terms of the look and feel of the phone, the X5 plays out like a ?lite? version of the HTC Desire range. It uses old Android software, there?s less processing power under the hood, it?s got a similar wide, large display, and for all that it?s half the price.

Large display; simplistic, attractive design; good battery life for Android phone; cheap

Bulky size; lacking Wi-Fi tethering

The Huawei Ideos X5 is a 120x62x11mm smartphone that sports a 3.8 touchscreen with an 800x480 pixel resolution. The screen isn't too bright or sharp, but at least it's wide. On the backend, it hides an 800MHz Qualcomm CPU, 2GB of internal memory and 512MB of RAM.

Large display; simplistic, attractive design; good battery life for Android phone; cheap

Bulky size; lacking Wi-Fi tethering

Huawei U8800 IDEOS X5

The team first heard about the IDEOS X5 earlier in the year, when it made its first appearance at CES. The X5 is Huawei's flagship smartphone and at a cost of US $381, it makes a compelling value argument for itself right off the bat.

Good looks; built well; decent overall performance; good web experience; great value for money

Limited battery; screen overwhelmed by sunlight

Huawei Ideos X5

Huawei has done a fine job of delivering a phone with a good user experience and most of the components that we expect to see in phones twice- or three-times its price. The handset design isn't attractive but it's functional, and the 8GB microSD included with the X5 is the icing on the cake.

Incredible low price; Great performance; Swype keyboard; 8GB microSD included

No Wi-Fi hotspot, Average battery life, No media sharing, Slowest ..; camera ...

Huawei Ideos X5

Chinese manufacturer Huawei is shaking the smartphone tree in 2011, introducing a budget price to devices with components we expect to pay three-times as much for. But do you actually get a comparative product for the bargain price?

Incredible low price; Great performance; Swype keyboard; 8GB microSD included

No Wi-Fi hotspot; Average battery life; No media sharing; Slowest ..; camera ..; ever

The Huawei IDEOS X5 was, and still is, the cheapest device around with such amazing specs. I mean you can pick up this device for just under $300 at your local Crazy John's and you'll get virtually the same specs as an HTC Desire Z minus the $500 price tag.

Cheap; Fairly fast; Android 2.2 (Vanilla; 720p video recording

A little bit bulky; Capacitive buttons
