I had to replace my old HP scanner because a driver was not available for Windows 7. I chose the ScanJet G4050 because of its slide scanning feature as I have hundreds of slides from the pre-digital age that I would like to get into digital format.

Overall function is excellent. It is a great replacement for my HP 4800 series, which is not Windows 10 compatible. My only complaint is the loose connection between the upper scanning lid, which is designed to accommodate 3D objects. It shouldn't be that easy to disengage.
Though the world and its mum have moved from film to digital photography, there's been some innovative launches for creative pros in the scanner market in the last six months. Epson's Perfection V700 and v750 included two lenses – one for film and one for reflectives – and now HP has introduced...
Six-colour scanning; Excellent colour capture
Slow; Mediocre dust-&-scratches/anti-fade technology
Bought this scanner to copy the hundreds of old slides of family and outdoor activities. My computer has Windows 7 Home premium operating system. The software for the scanner will not load. HP tech service was of no help. They do not have a driver that is compatible with this system.
Accurate Color; Good Resolution
Difficult Setup; Difficult to Keep Clean; Inaccurate Scans; Poor Software
Buying a dedicated scanner for home usage is not very feasible these days, considering the great deals currently available on MFDs (Multi-Function Devices, Scanners+Printers+Copiers).
This is my second G4050 and is just as reliable as my first one, but much quieter. You don't hear a blower fan start on power up, and the scan sweep sound is barely perceptible to other workers closeby. The unit is handsome and compact as well, and has a dignity all its own.
Bottom line, do not use with the included program. It's horrible, and will cause no end of problems. With a 3rd party program like Vuescan ($40) its an entirely different scanner and can give great output. Be ready to wait though because at maximum resolution this thing is SLOW!!
Looks good; 4 buttons work quickly
Big; takes lots of deskspace; Included program is terrible!!!; SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW; Does not scan Black and white very well
You may be wondering why HP's Scanjet G4050 costs almost £200, especially as there's not a lot of technical difference between it and the G3010. The key difference is that it supports six-colour, 96-bit scanning. This involves scanning each item twice with two different light sources.
For pure picture quality, you'll have a hard time finding a consumer-friendly scanner with this level of performance. It includes six-color, 96-bit scanning to ensure your images maintain rich colors and deep blacks even at very high resolutions.
I replaced my canon scanner with a HP Scanjet g4050 recently. While it is the largest scanner I've owned in several years, I now need the ability to scan legal size documents, old canon was just too small for that job.
