I would consider this camera to be a hybrid between a DSLR and a compact. It's functionality and low light capabilities are on par with what you'd find in a DSLR, while it is smaller and has a fixed lens similar to a compact camera.
this is the most upmarket of Canon's compacts, it's made of metal and has a lens that goes to f2 at the wideangle end, and to 24mm equivalent. But as a result of both these features, it's much bigger than typical compacts, and heavier. If this is not a problem for you then it does well.
The G1 X MkII is a solid-feeling premium compact that offers an excellent standard of image quality. With improvements in many of the areas that the G1 X was criticised for, Canon has produced a camera that can now hold its own in most shooting situations.
Each camera has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II , ( buy from Amazon ) ( review ) is quite clearly superior in low-light conditions due to its larger pixels and faster lens.
Much has changed in the fixed-lens camera segment since Canon introduced the original G1X. We saw the rise of cameras with all sorts of added features like Wi-Fi and NFC which allow them to play nicely with smart devices that many consumers have grown fond of.
I purchased the G1 X MII to complement my EOS 7D MII. I hoped to make landscape photos (almost) the same quality as with the EOS when I go outside to the mountains and I am lazy to carry the bag with EOS+lenses. And it works ! Threre are anyway few reasons I couldn't give 5 stars.
Fantastic lens with big aperture at wide end; Very low noise sensor; Wonderful images, to buy a lens for another system would cost you more than this camera
Heavy and not really pocketable; No viewfinder though I purchased the add on EVF which I haven't used as much as I thought I would; If you buy the camera try without first b4 buying EVF
The sequel to Canon's acclaimed G1 X is here, and it's no slouch.
The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mk II succeeds the original as the top model in Canon's acclaimed PowerShot compact camera line-up. It has a redesigned body and several interesting tweaks to the specification.
