Canon PowerShot D20 review

Adventure cameras have been growing in popularity for several years, and almost all of the main manufacturers have at least one waterproof and shockproof compact in their current model range.

GPS that actually works; Build quality; Start-up time

Fiddly controls

Canon PowerShot D20

We've tested a whole bunch of tough, rugged and waterproof digital compact cameras. They may well be shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof too, but, truth be told, no company has got the full package quite right after many years' worth of attempts.

Waterproof; tough; rugged; GPS; lens-based stabilisation; 3-inch 416k-dot LCD

Awkward design; bunched up zoom buttons placement; easy to get in finger in front of lens; slow autofocus; lack of user-defined controls (AF point placement; manual shooting); so-so image quality

If you need a point and shoot camera to fill the photographic void in-between a DSLR and your phone, get the Canon PowerShot S100. But if you need something more durable and love Canon, get this camera.

The PowerShot D20 is Canon's latest waterproof, shockproof, and generally accident-proof camera.

Canon Powershot D20

For a camera specialist company like Canon, the D20 is a bit of a surprise. The somewhat chunky compact features a unique design with some counterintuitive elements, like the fact the shutter button is on the right, and yet you can only attach a wrist strap to the left-hand-side of the camera.

Pretty good camera it does what it says it will do but I returned it only because I found a better deal at my local walmart for around the same price, the new fujifilm that can go up to 50 feet under water, but if I hadn't found this camera I would have kept the cannon, good camera over all.

Canon Powershot D20

If you need a camera that is tough enough to withstand the odd knock, and can do a job underwater the Powershot D20 does a fantastic job for the price, otherwise you're better off looking elsewhere.

Get up close with the Canon Powershot D20, and you'll soon see that it's a rugged thing; It feels reassuringly weighty when held; It's hardly a looker, but in terms of durability, it does a job; It may be one of those so-called rugged cameras, but the Powershot D20 is capable of some great shots.

While the Powershot D20 is capable of producing some lovely shots, as a compact camera in daily use it still has a lot to live up to when compared to more traditional compacts; If you want all-round performance you're better off getting a ‘non-rugged' compact snapper.
