Canon 650D review

The Canon EOS 650D - or Canon EOS Rebel T4i in the US - sits above the Canon EOS 600D/Rebel T3i in Canon's DSLR range, and has been designed for beginners and enthusiast photographers alike.

Canon EOS 650D review

The EOS 650D sits between the 600D and the 60D in Canon's digital SLR range, and is classed as an entry-level model. There's nothing entry-level about its capabilities, though: it's fast, has an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor, is well built and has a touchscreen.

Fast performance; good usability; accurate focusing

Optical viewfinder leaves out some edge details

Canon EOS 650D review

While the EOS 650D offers little significant advantage in image quality over the 600D, the viewfinder AF and overall performance are better, and the clever touch-screen control system works extremely well, allowing you to really make the most of an excellent camera.

Touch-screen controls; Performance; Handling; Image quality

Slow live view AF; High-ISO noise

Canon EOS 650D Digital SLR Review

Video is improved thanks to stereo sound and continuous AF, although this is still generally quite slow compared to mirrorless cameras, and the noise of the lens focussing is easily picked up by the internal microphones.

Excellent noise performance up to ISO3200 and above; Live view allows 5x and 10x magnification to aid manual focus; Excellent image quality; Excellent colour reproduction; Excellent touch screen; Solid body with good handling; Playback image star ratings

Slow live view focus (compared to Sony SLT or Mirrorless; Lens focusing motor loud and picked up by microphones; Noticeable barrel and pincushion distortion with 18-135mm lens; The lens aberration correction feature slows continuous shooting

Canon EOS 650D

The Canon EOS 650D - otherwise known as the Rebel T4i or Kiss X6i to our worldwide readers - is the first DSLR to include a touchscreen LCD. It was only a matter of time. With the introduction of HD movie capture in stills cameras and the compact system camera market making headway with hands-on...

Responsive autofocus; touchscreen can be useful; JPEG burst mode can be sustained (picture dependent); LCD screen is detailed and vari-angle useful for framing; live view autofocus improvements benefit movie mode

Plasticky build quality; raw & JPEG continuous shooting is still poor (limited buffer); live view autofocus still lags behind SLT and compact system cameras; pre-flash in low light just isn't subtle; higher ISO images have more noise than the previous generation sensor; movie mode autofocus still...

Canon EOS 650D review Review

The EOS 650D is Canon's best entry-level dSLR to date, but with several interchangeable-lens compacts offering similar touchscreen features, higher resolutions and a healthy range of lenses, there are too many lower-priced alternatives to make it a no-questions-asked must-buy.

Responsive touchscreen; Impressive video performance; Punchy; accurate colours

Some colour fringing with 18-55m kit lens; Price undercut by rivals; No resolution enhancement over predecessor

Canon EOS 650D

The Canon 650D is the latest addition to Canon's mid-range DSLR lineup. For the time being it will sit alongside the 18-month-old 600D , though it's likely it will eventually replace it completely.

Touch-screen adds to user experience; Improved autofocus performance; Good image quality

Touch-screen icons a little small; Slow processing of digital filter effects
