Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM review by cpe1991

I bought this lens for a safari holiday based on these reviews. They are right - it is a fantastic lens. It is relatively light and well balanced on my 7D and I can walk around all day with the camera in my hand. It is tack sharp at all focal lengths, excellent contrast and colour.

Superbly sharp; relatively light; useful range; superb IS

Introduction: The Canon 70-200F4L is the cheapest "L" series lens in the market. It has a very good range and extremely good image quality. Summary: Canon has released 4 different 70-200 lenses (from cheapest to most expensive order); 70-200F4L USM 70-200F4L IS USM 70-200F2.8 USM 70-200F2.8 IS USM...

The common strengths on the 70-200F4L are; - Picture quality stays sharp all the way up to -200mm; - Zoom barrel doesn't extend (comfortable; - USM; very fast focusing

The common weaknesses on the 70-200F4L are; - No Image Stabalization; - Heavy

One of Canon sharpest lens

The Canon EF70-200mm f4L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens is a great and versatile lens for landscape and wildlife photography. It is very very sharp with dynamic color. It is not too heavy and is very portable. The focus is just excellent.

My first L lens

This was my first significant lens purchase, and it hasn't disappointed. I have a Rebel Xsi, and without the battery grip, this lens would seem a bit large on that body, but otherwise it does a phenomenal job! After much research, I decided to start with this lens to add reach to the kit lens.

Consistent Output; Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Quick Focus; Rugged; Sharp Focus; Strong Construction

I bought this very lens about 2 years ago. I love it. The pictures I take with this lens looks like a professional has taken them. The telephoto lens is a must have for taken outside pictures.

Image Stabilisation Not Necessary

I have had two of the 70 - 200 2.8 IS lenses and have always been disappointed with the amount of time it took to engage the IS. The IS lens would fish around when in that mode and so I usually had it turned off and used a shorter shutter speed for preference in getting a crisper image.

Top lens

It's a great lens for certain things. I use it mainly for landscapes. The f4 is not important in landscape so if you need it for sports/wildlife don't bother, get the longer fixed focal length 300 or 400mm which are both superb. As a general low to mid length focal length it's hard to beat.

After procrastinating for quite some time because I do have a large range of Canon lenses for my cameras, cost etc I took the plunge and bought this. Thus far all my test images are superb with a real difference when compared with other images with other lenses. I just wish I had not waited so long.
