Long Haul Flight? Our Top 6 Travel Essentials

One of the cons to living in such a beautiful country down-under is that we are far, far away from most of the rest of the world. Except for Australia and a handful of the Pacific Islands, most international destinations require a long-haul flight, sometimes 9 to even 17 hours in the air. Europe is often a 30 hour journey away. If you have a long haul flight coming up, it’s important to be prepared so that you can avoid the discomfort of it as much as possible.

Here are some of our long-haul flight essentials to ensure the trip is as smooth as possible.

1. Noise Cancelling Headphones

There is a good chance that there will be a crying baby on your flight. If you want to tune out the sounds of the other passengers, and the drone of the plane engine so you can try to get some sleep, noise cancelling headphones are your best bet. They are more comfortable for long wear than earbuds and will help the plane ride feel that little bit more peaceful.

2. Compression Socks

When you are seated for a long time, in a tight space, your blood flow tends to slow down, especially in your legs. Some people may even wind up with slightly swollen feet when the plane lands after a long flight! Compression socks will help improve circulation and reduce swelling on long haul flights. Toss them into your carry on!

3. Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are a great way to organise your luggage before you head to the airport. Organise the different types of clothing so that it’s easier to access and re-pack when you are at your destination. You can even get compression packing cubes that help squeeze the air out of the cubes and between the clothes so that you can create more space in your suitcase or backpack.

4. Travel Pillow

There are all kinds of travel pillow designs on the market. You don’t want to land in your destination with a stiff neck. Grab one that feels as comfortable to you as possible. There are memory foam travel pillows and ones that look more like a scarf than a pillow. Sleeping on a plane is tough as it is and a travel pillow might make it a little bit easier.

5. A Reusable Water Bottle

You can’t bring water through security. But if you empty your reusable water bottle just before you go through, you can then refill it when you are at your gate or on the plane. It’s important to stay hydrated while flying, due to the dry air. Pack some electrolyte drops or dissolvable tablets to help your body absorb the hydration better and prevent headaches.

6. Luggage Tracker

Having a bluetooth tracker can be a lifesaver when going to a faraway destination. You can keep track of your checked-in luggage’s location, and see if it makes it onto the plane. If it doesn’t make it to your final destination, you’ll be able to see where it is so airport staff can send it to you as quickly as possible.
