It’s a habit among Kiwi men to stop shaving during the Christmas holidays. However, some do need to trim their beards occasionally after letting them grow for too long. A beard trimmer can come in handy when you’re about to visit the in-laws or just want to look a bit tidier. Beard trimmers have increased in popularity the last few years. This may be due to men paying more attention to their appearance in general or the popularity of men sporting “designer stubble”, but whatever the drivers are – grooming our faces is on the increase ! Given that a large percentage of men sporting beards now are professionals, it’s only natural they want to present a neat appearance. Maybe they’ve given up on the shaver and scissors method and have decided to manage their beards using an electric beard and moustache trimmer ?

What a beard trimmer should be able to handle

You don’t want to recharge the battery every time you use it, so it needs to last several sessions. A good trimmer should have a battery life of at least one hour. Going wireless is recommended so that you don’t have to worry about about forgetting cables and it’s easier to operate the trimmer when there’s no cable to get in your way. A rotating blade makes it easier to trim around difficult-to -reach areas such as around the mouth and the nose. Also check that you can select the length in millimeters, so that you have the option to trim at any desired length. It’s also important that the trimmer functions well under pressure in order to ensure a smooth cut, ie if you have thick facial hair growth or are maintaining a longer beard.

How to use a beard trimmer

We’ll focus on the standard and easy case here and assume you have a normal length beard.  The first thing you need to do when trimming your beard is to decide how much to trim. Set the length and start trimming. Men with longer beards might want to consider using several nozzles.

Popular trimmers

The Braun CruZer 6 costs around $100 and is currently the most popular trimmer. There are 5-6 brands that sell well in New Zealand and the market isn’t dominated by one or two players as in many other product categories.
