Bought these for my Windows 10 Desktop / Streaming Server (PLEX). Just plugged them in and used Windows to create a storage space. Very easy , no hassle. Most time consuming thing was the physical install. Drive speeds are as listed, no loud noises (3 drives) , packaging was top notch as well.
Can't find my original reviews, so figured I'd do a new one. Brief setup of NAS (all are WD Reds): 1 set of 5 2TB jbod (not on all of the time), 2 raid 10s with 4x4TB drives each (on 24/7). The jbod was set up first and a year or so later the raid 10s were added. Finally, a drive went bad.
reliable - lots o' space -quiet
- one finally went bad
The performance of the 4TB is a very good enough on most counts for a network storage drive. The performance of the Red Series so far remains consistent. Even if you look at average access tests, not only it performs better than Seagate' 4TB NAS counterpart but also the WD Red 2 and 3TB variants.
I wanted to expand my NAS storage for multimedia purposes. Paired with Synology 218 i run 4k UHD HDR videos in my network without breaking a sweat. Raid 0 as i need more space not security of the files. I am happy with the result.
Western Digital's RED series is quite unique since it was from the ground up for home-use RAID environments and to compliment WD's other NAS-centric products like the SE and RE . This is very much a middle-of-the road type product which hopes to bring mass storage to a desktop environment for those...
Not working / corrupted and returned the disk to WD for replacement. Packing was not sufficient and loose packing.
These hard drives are made for 24hr use in a Network Hard Drive systems. Well manufactured to stand the rugged environment of 24/7 abuse. Highly recommended.
Have 2 of these running in a Synology DS213J. Average temps around 27 degrees and silent. Very happy with them.
Capacity; price; designed for NAS environments
None
Have two of these paired with an older Seagate, solid performance in the NAS so far, considerably cooler than the old Seagate solution, hopefully work well for the years to come.
