WD My Passport WDBY8L0020BBK 2 TB USB 3.0 Portable Storage Drive Review
WD sent a new portable hard drive- 2 TB My Passport drive with USB 3.0 port for evaluation. Time and again, External hard drive has become very useful in more 1 ways: as a backup and as a source for portable storage and with devices such as LCD screens and NAS storage using external drives with USB...
Western Digital My Passport 2TB: high capacity portable disk
A 2TB hard disk you can slip into your pocket
WD My Passport Essential 2TB 2.5 inch External Hard Drive - Black
Excellent little drive, have some of the previous range and two of these. Not a single thing to complain about. Gladly recommended.
Failed Within 6 Hours
Used this on a new 2012 MacBook Pro with USB 3.0 (after reformatting using Apple's Disk Utility on OS X Lion) and tried to copy/paste two folders containing 1.2TB worth of backup data.- Compact
- portable
- Very unreliable
- crashes / dies permanently when used for storing large files
AVOID the 2TB Version
Every now and then, I get the infamous BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). Something about driver incompatibility. What should be a simple "plug-and-play," device, somehow Western Digital found a way to muck it up. This is supposed to be a simple USB device, for heaven's sake!!!- 2tb is a lot of space
- bsods every now and then
Beware Mac Users
The box says it can be formatted to Mac O/S. Not so! Wouldn't mount or partition. If you want a drive for your Mac, make sure it's the Mac (already) formatted type.- Difficult To Set Up
Western Digital My Passport 2TB review
Portable hard drives typically distinguish themselves in one of two ways: Speed or capacity. With its brisk USB 3.0 interface and plentiful 2TB of storage space, the Western Digital My Passport (which retails for £170) approaches this proverbial fork in the road and takes both paths.- Huge capacity
- Speedy USB 3.0 transfer rates
- Attractive and compact chassis
- Some useful pre-installed software
- Not as future-proofed as some rivals
- No alternative connections to USB
Excellent portable drive
I now own three of these drives for portable backup storage. One is my Time Machine backup drive, one is for backing up files from my file server. These work flawlessly over USB2.0, I plan on hooking them up to USB3 as soon as I can to take advantage of the speed.
Fast and Reliable...
I was attempting to hold out until a portable drive with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt came out. Doubtful, at this point, that anyone would ever consider that possibility. But, circumstances changed and I required a large drive with a fast/common interface (USB 3.0).- 2TB of storage and USB 3.0
- No thunderbolt compatibility..
Review: Western Digital My Passport (2TB)
The My Passport is Western Digital's mainstream line of portable hard drives. The best performer in the roundup, it's available in 500GB to 2TB...
