Hardware good, software confusing
WD's software for this big 2TB drive can get in the way of Apple's excellent Time Machine backup program, unless you find your way around it-without instructions to that effect. Otherwise, it seems to work OK, and the price is right for May, 2011.
Western Digital My Book 4 TB (WDBACW0040HBK) Review
Western Digital's My Book series has been around for some generations now, catering to users who want huge capacity but are not necessarily looking at portable drives. With the My Book 4TB drive WD offers a desktop drive with the maximum capacity available on a single drive.
Only buy it if you really need a dedicated 3TB drive, and only to use with a 64-bit OS.
The Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB external hard drive with USB 3.0 ("super-speed USB") support. I decided to pick one up because I recently also purchased a D-Link Boxee Box which I was hoping to use it with.

My Book Essential 3 TB
External hard drives are a nice storage- and back up media, but when getting one you must first choose the connection you want. Network drives are handy if there are many users of PCs sharing the same data, e-SATA has been a fast, dedicated connection for external drives, and then there's USB.- Compact
- Fast
- Stylish
- Limited backup software
Whats not to like...? 3TB of USB 3.0 space. It comes with good build quality from a well known brand.
WD MyBook
All-in-all it does what it's supposed to do, hasn't failed on me yet, and it's always a good idea to keep your important data backed up. Plus now it's way cheaper than it was a year ago. I give this product 4 eggs.- Configured as a RAID right out of the box
- Recognized on both Apple MAc and Windows OS platforms
- Have had it for over a year now and hasn't given me any problems to date
- Works great as a backup drive for my music, movies, photos
- No eSATA or firewire 400/800 connections for faster data transfers
- The USB connection on the back is poorly made
- The UBS cable falls out a lot so I had to use a plastic cable zip tie to secure it to the back of the drive
- Also you cannot use any other drive other than WD Green Drives.
Works as described [...]
I am using the drive to backup my movies, pictures, and documents. You can use Windows Explorer to view and open files. It is easy to use, but read operators manual that is on the drive before setting up using it.- Easy To Install
- Quiet
- Reliable
- None
WD Book rocks
This is my 2nd WD drive, my first was a WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA, this one is an external USB2.0 drive so I didnt expect it to be as fast. It is not bad actually, just takes a little longer to spin up. Im not sure whats the drive model inside the enclosure since I never opened it.- Excellent speed for external USB 2.0 drive
- Reliable after about a years operation.
- It gets warm after a while Seek noise could be quieter
500GB My Book Premium eSATA/USB2
