Only buy it if you really need a dedicated 3TB drive, and only to use with a 64-bit OS.

The Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB external hard drive with USB 3.0 ("super-speed USB") support. I decided to pick one up because I recently also purchased a D-Link Boxee Box which I was hoping to use it with.

Hardware good, software confusing

WD's software for this big 2TB drive can get in the way of Apple's excellent Time Machine backup program, unless you find your way around it-without instructions to that effect. Otherwise, it seems to work OK, and the price is right for May, 2011.

Overview Western Digital are famous for Hard Drives and this is one of their drives in their Essential's range. On the face of it, you get a whopping 2Tb of space (more than you could ever use?) that is packed into a stylish modern casing. But what are you really getting?
Pros:
  • Stylish Design
  • Large Capacity
  • Plug & Play
Cons:
  • Slightly overpriced

Perfect for USB 2.0 only

This hard drive sometimes tends to not be recognised by my Win 7 64 bit when I plug it in to USB 3.0. Even though you succeed in it you it may disappear afterwards and it is not easy to get it back. Restart of system doesn't help. whereas there are no issues so far with USB 2.0.

Pretty quiet. Good size drive. USB 3.0 Bad Points: About 350mb of bloatware on the disk, before you even start Shell shows every finger print. Easily breakable/scratchable case as cheap plastic Off button could have been more easier to locate and use, Stable when stood, but ever so easy to knock...
Pros:
  • Good looking and sleek

Cause it was cheap, i like that it was cheap i dislike that its so big and requires a power output this is obviously an outdated hard drive and isn't advanced as 2011 + range.
