it stores your stuff.

Cause it was cheap, i like that it was cheap i dislike that its so big and requires a power output this is obviously an outdated hard drive and isn't advanced as 2011 + range.

Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB review

External hard disks aren't always the most attractive pieces of kit and they often look ugly sat on a desk. Not so with Western Digital's My Book Essential. As its name suggests, the disk's rounded edges are designed to fit in with the rest of your books on a shelf, and the top, rear and back...

Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB USB 3.0 Black

3 TB! Excellent price for a 3 TB drive. Not that rapid. Slow spin up time if it's been idle. I got two of these, and carry them about often simply because I rotate them to another place for offsite backups. No reliability concerns but.USB 3.

Build looks sturdy and there is sufficient space for cooling air flow. The disk powers up quickly. It comes bundled with useful security and backup software from WD. I have set the disk to power off after 20 minutes of disuse to save power and elongate its life.

Western Digital My Book (4TB)

The Western Digital My Book (4TB) ($209.99 list) desktop-class external hard drive gives the photo, music, or video collector a place to keep a whole lot of files. It's basic, utilitarian storage that will get the job done, and sometimes that's all you need.
Pros:
  • Excellent capacity
  • Fanless.
Cons:
  • Had trouble with our benchmark tests
  • Lacks capacity indicator

Only buy it if you really need a dedicated 3TB drive, and only to use with a 64-bit OS.

The Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB external hard drive with USB 3.0 ("super-speed USB") support. I decided to pick one up because I recently also purchased a D-Link Boxee Box which I was hoping to use it with.

Hardware good, software confusing

WD's software for this big 2TB drive can get in the way of Apple's excellent Time Machine backup program, unless you find your way around it-without instructions to that effect. Otherwise, it seems to work OK, and the price is right for May, 2011.

The hard drive is of good quality, though the included software is absolutely trash. An experienced user would fmt the hd as soon as they get it, but I suggest non-experienced users to do so as well.
Pros:
  • Sturdy external hard drive
Cons:
  • software that comes with it is horrible and confuses "newbs

Perfect for USB 2.0 only

This hard drive sometimes tends to not be recognised by my Win 7 64 bit when I plug it in to USB 3.0. Even though you succeed in it you it may disappear afterwards and it is not easy to get it back. Restart of system doesn't help. whereas there are no issues so far with USB 2.0.
