Ultimate Ears UE MEGABOOM Wireless Bluetooth Speakers [Review]

If you want to go big in the $299 bluetooth speaker market and looking for a waterproof speaker then the Megaboom maybe up your alley. Plus with its accompanied app always having updated features even sporting an alarm clock its hard to not like this device.

Featured Review: Ultimate Ears MegaBoom Bluetooth Speaker

In the past, we've reviewed the UE Boom speakers. There's the Boom and Mini Boom, both of which are fantastic speakers. Now we've got our hands on the MegaBoom Speaker. Which is a much bigger speaker compared to the Boom, and it has more battery life, more sound, and more everything basically.

Ultimate Ears Megaboom review: Ideal accessory for an artificially intelligent Amazon Echo Dot

The Ultimate Ears Megaboom speaker is no larger than a can of beer, but still packs in quite a punch

UE MEGABOOM Wireless Speakers

UE's newest addition to the BOOM line-up is nothing less of a stellar performing portable speaker. This is the first Bluetooth portable speaker that can effectively double up as a compact in-door and out-door speaker.

Great design; Rugged; Waterproof; IPX7 rating (immersion proof) with; presumably; its caps on; App packed with features; Great sound quality; Double-up feature; Great app for both iOS and Android

Pricey at £299; Not as portable as the original

Ultimate Ears MEGABOOM Review

Now, when it comes to the BOOM vs the MEGABOOM I have to be honest and say I'm still a proponent of the original. And only because it's more portable and practical to carry, especially if you're traveling long distances or backpacking.

UE's Megaboom is designed so it can be used horizontally or vertically, although it can roll a bit when used horizontally. With speaker drivers pointing in multiple directions, the Megaboom fills a room with sound rather than blast sound in one direction.

Last week I wrote on the announcement of UE MEGABOOM (US$299.99) Bluetooth speaker, the new big brother to the UE BOOM ($199.99) and the UE MINIBOOM ($99.99) . I reviewed the UE BOOM last year and was thrilled with its performance as a portable, durable and great sounding wireless speaker.

UE Megaboom review

A couple of months ago, I was able to review the UE Boom 2 Bluetooth speaker . I found that it has wonderful audio quality but lacks bass and has a handful of relatively minor issues with the app. This time, I've been given the opportunity to review the UE Megaboom.

Wonderful audio quality; Better bass than UE Boom 2; The Block Party feature is awesome; Portable; Waterproof (1 meter for 30 minutes

Expensive

Ultimate Ears UE Megaboom Review

Ultimate Ears' UE Boom  was an excellent $200 Bluetooth speaker, and even two years after its release, it's still a solid choice if you want a rugged, portable way to share your music wirelessly. Now Ultimate Ears offers a bigger version of the Boom. The UE Megaboom is beefier, more powerful, and louder than the UE Boom, and at $299.99 it's also $100 more expensive. It's a very good portable speaker if you want to blast sound through a room without any wires, but it struggles with deep bass at top volumes. If you can spend $50 more, the Editors' Choice Bowers & Wilkins T7 ($500.00 at Amazon)  offers superior audio performance, but the Megaboom is a solid choice for the price. Just don't try to blow it out with thumpy dance music. DesignThe Megaboom is a faithful upscaling of the UE Boom. It's a rugged rubber cylinder that measures a tall 8.9 inches and is 3.5 inches in diameter. It's available in black, electric blue, red, or purple, and is covered almost entirely on the curved s...

The Ultimate Ears UE Megaboom is the bigger, louder follow-up to the original UE Boom, and just like its predecessor offers a rugged design and strong audio performance for a portable Bluetooth speaker.

Powerful for its size; Solid audio quality across most of the range

Struggles with deep sub-bass
