Twisted Metal has a very special place in our hearts. It was one of the first 3D games we played and also to this day, remains one of the best. A friend had been one of the lucky few to be granted a PlayStation for Christmas and had saved up to buy the game.

28th February 2012 - Back in 1995, David Jaffe made a game called Twisted Metal on the original Playstation, the first game of its kind revolving around cars blowing each other to pieces.

Twisted Metal delivers if you want utter mayhem in the online arena. The weapons are destructive and the track design is suburb. It's more suited to series' veterans, however, as gamers are thrown straight into the deep end.

Career missions are interspersed with boss battles, each more overwhelming than the last. While they're certainly engrossing, I experienced major technical issues, with the camera going haywire until I killed myself, in the second boss battle.

No, it isn't as iconic as Twisted Metal 2 , but it still serves up a healthy dose of visceral fun that is only slightly diminished by dubious design decisions. It's certainly the benchmark for vehicular combat this generation.

Offering intense vehicle combat is Twisted Metal (PS3) which reboots the Twisted Metal franchise that first launched on the PS2. Twisted Metal features both a story campaign and multiplayer combat (4 player split screen and 16 player online).

As the gaming industry continues to move toward more story driven experiences, it's easy to forget that some games should be made just to be played. Eat Sleep Play's new Twisted Metal is exactly that sort of game.

While it's not without its flaws, Twisted Metal manages to recapture that feeling the original games inspired way back during the PS1's early life. It is a perfectly-preserved slice of the late '90s that manages to appeal to established fans of the franchise, while still making the necessary changes...

Well-rounded selection of vehicles; plenty of game modes and content; fantastic handling and sense of control; robust and addictive multiplayer

Opponent AI is cheap; online matchmaking is wonky
