Toshiba Tecra X40-D (i7-7600U, FHD) Laptop Review

The Toshiba Tecra X40 is essentially the Portègè X30 with a 14-inch display. As such, it shares many of the same strengths and weaknesses of its smaller brother. The beautiful chassis is well engineered and very sturdy while remaining fairly light for a 14-inch notebook.

gorgeous chassis; study build; very thin and lightweight; two Thunderbolt 3 ports; excellent system performance; speedy SSD

lid is thin and flexes easily; fingerprints readily show; keyboard is noisy and subpar; speakers are thin; display is mediocre compared to rivals

Light for its size and solid in most respects, the Tecra X40-D is an able business laptop that makes the most sense in its lower-cost configurations.

Fine value in its base configuration; Strong build quality; Comfortable keyboard; touch pad; Face-rec and fingerprint biometric features

Ho-hum looks; Battery life doesn't match the competition's; Audible fan noise

Toshiba Tecra X40-D-10H

Toshiba makes an enormous number of laptop models exclusively for business use. The Tecra systems are just a small part of its business-oriented range, focused on those on the move who need a powerful platform that they can transport easily.

Light yet powerful; 14-inch display; Great USB Type-C support

No PCIe SSD; Missing LAN port

Toshiba Tecra X40-D-10H review: speedy, but disappointing

You know you're in trouble, though, when the thing you most like about a laptop is its docking station. As I mentioned at the start of this review, competition is tough. While an identically specified ThinkPad X1 Carbon (with a 512GB SSD) would cost almost £200 more, it's worth the extra investment...

Overall performance; Excellent keyboard

Subdued screen; Fans get very loud
