Tales of Zestiria (PlayStation 4) Review

In Bandai Namco and Tri-Crescendo's latest action RPG, Tales of Zestiria , users take control of the adventurous and optimistic young man named Sorey, who must follow his destiny to become the world renowned "Shepherd," a hero that can borrow the powers of sentient beings known as the Seraphim.

Tales of Zestiria

That doesn't make Tales of Zestiria a bad JRPG. It has its dull passages and a tendency for endless exposition, but it's still brighter, more colourful and more immediately fun than any of the recent Final Fantasies, and it's arguably the best thing the genre has thrown up since Ni-No-Kuni.

Crisp anime visuals; Deep combat systems; Engaging characters and story; A big; lengthy tale

Some boring and generic dungeons; Both mind-boggling and over-explained

PS4 Review - 'Tales of Zestiria'

Players delve into a grand storyline and discover the zest of adventure with new characters, magical lands and action-packed gameplay that the "Tales of" franchise is known for.

Tales of Zestiria Review

doesn't deviate too far from its competent predecessors, but it's not a carbon copy, either. It may have linear dungeons and a less-than-stellar story, but it's open-world exploration, enjoyable customization, and flashy new Armitization feature are enough for it to stand on its own.

Open-world map; Armitization feature; Deep customization

Bland story and characters; Linear dungeons

"Fans will be glad to immerse themselves in the fantasy world and the rich, engaging combat, but it's far from the series' best efforts." ? 2015 Bandai Namco Games, Bandai Namco Games, tri-Crescendo. All rights reserved.

Brilliant battle system; fantastic soundtrack; enjoyable cast

Slow start; battle camera; obtuse skill system; frame rate issues

Tales of Zestiria

Although, in this part of the world, we got to enjoy two entries in the franchise last year ( Tales of Xillia 2 and Tales of Hearts R ), the Japanese audience had to wait for three years after Xillia 2 to get their hands on Tales of Zestiria .

Tales of Zestiria review

Tales of Zestiria is not my favourite Tales game and far from the best, but it's still a fun world-spanning adventure typical of the series that adds in some cool combat mechanics, semi-open environments full of secrets to discover and a decent, if always predictable storyline.

+ Beautiful 1080p anime aesthetic; + Entertaining; if predictable story; + Engaging action combat system

- DLC add-ons just insulting; - No screenshot/recording allowed on PS4; - Camera angle spazs out in battles

Review: Tales of Zestiria

Tales of Zestiria is an enjoyable role-playing game despite its flaws. The cast is interestingly developed in animated short stories and the main quest; while the game has some of the best English voice acting for a Japanese role-playing game, despite its cliched narrative.
