When SteamWorld Dig burst onto the scene back in 2013, the gaming industry took notice and developer Image & Form became a studio to watch. They followed up the 3DS hit with the radically different, yet equally acclaimed, SteamWorld Heist.

As Image & Form often reminds us, its now-familiar core IP began with SteamWorld: Tower Defense on DSiWare, a thoroughly decent tower defence game. It was SteamWorld Dig that was transformative for the studio, however, achieving well-earned success on the 3DS and a range of other platforms.
Steamworld Dig 2 is a top-notch game that so succeeds at what it set out to do, that calling it merely "retro-inspired" almost feels like an insult. It's a fantastic 2D title, and belongs in anyone's collection.
Steamworld Dig 2 is really a wonderful game. I loved the original, yet the sequel builds on and expands it in nearly every way. The basic premise is that your character is able to dig down into the depths of the world, revealing caverns, treasure, enemies and more.
