Works almost perfect in Linux, with JACK2 and 10.3 ms latency!!

This is a review of the "StarTech.com 7.1 USB Audio Adapter External Sound Card with SPDIF Digital Audio Sound Cards ICUSBAUDIO7D" card. I bought this card to do one thing -- take the input from my PS4 from TOSLINK and output it to my speakers and headphones.

StarTech 7.1 USB Audio Adaptor

I was worried at first from reading other reviews stating that it did not work with Windows10. B&H assured me that it does. It was a super easy setup and I am using it now. I highly recommend this.

Purchased this to fill a specific requirement for a USB digital audio output and in spite of several attempts at different settings and/or drivers it simply does not fully meet those requirements.

Price; usb cable included

Very limited optical support under windows 8.1

Solved my problem

I was having sound issues with my desk top built in and this was an affordable and easy solution. It handles external speakers, headphones and dual microphones. I am very pleased with this products capabilities and performance.

Not suitable on Mac, great under Linux

I tested the device and am using it for video editing on Mac and Linux. It works perfect out of the box on Linux, but I've had big volume control issues on Mac. Only the speaker output works there and the volume is too high for headphones.

Does what it's supposed to

Lets me run my gadgets through my 5.1 speakers, which is all I needed. My only complaint is that the software included sometimes wants to reset the default sound devices, which is more a nuisance than a real problem.

Difficult integration for Dolby Digital on MythTV

Cheap 7.1 sound card. Works well with windows, but could not get working with MythTV on linux. Appears that the chipset the unit is based upon does not support the S/PDIF out functionality under Linux so it isn't possible to stream the Dolby Digital or DTS streams to an external amplifier.

Surprised

It is a basic little box and software BUT for £25 it is well worth the money. Highly recommended.

StarTech.com 7.1 USB Audio Adapter External Sound Card with SPDIF Digital Audio review

Today we're looking at a 7.1 USB sound card from StarTech.com . USB sound cards are ideal as replacements for broken on-board sound cards, particularly on laptops or small factor systems where installing a PCI or PCI-e sound card isn't a viable option.

Easy USB installation; 10 ports should be enough for anyone; Headphone port is a killer feature

S/PDIF limitations; Mic quality not ideal; No software provided
