Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G review

The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is a superb addition to the Sony FE lineup that will appeal to a wide range of photographers, from landscape fans to wedding snappers. While it's expensive, this wide-angle prime justifies its price tag with its fast, quiet autofocus, compact design and impressive sharpness throughout its aperture range.

Compact size and lightweight; Three aperture control options; Excellent sharpness;

Expensive; Not as fast as rivals

Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G Review

With the FE 20mm F1.8 G ($899.99), Sony adds a bright, wide-angle prime lens to the E-mount full-frame mirrorless system. It has plenty of appeal for photographers who want to get some bokeh in wide-angle shots or keep exposure times shorter for astrophotography. It's a well-made lens that focuses quickly and silently. The Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 delivers sharp images for $349, but is slower to focus and doesn't open up to f/1.8. That gives the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G a distinct advantage and earns it our Editors' Choice. Wide and Bright Despite opening up to f/1.8, the FE 20mm is relatively light and compact. It measures 3.3 by 2.9 inches (HD), weighs 13.2 ounces, and supports 67mm front filters. Construction is sturdy polycarbonate, with seals to protect your camera from dust and splashes. The standard front and rear caps, along with a reversible lens hood, are included. The FE 20mm offers full-frame coverage, something absent from Sony's other 20mm prime, the E 20mm F...

The Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G is a sharp, bright lens with a wide angle of view. It's a top-end performer and a fine addition to your camera kit.

Wide-angle view; Crisp, bright optics; Focuses close; Quick, quiet autofocus; Dust and splash resistant; Clickless or detent operation for aperture ring

Pricey; Shows some focus breathing

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens - Brand New review

The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G lens is a very well-made weather-sealed lens, that gives impressive levels of sharpness, and a rather good close focusing distance. The lens is also to be commended for its relatively compact size and weight, being a good combination for the Sony Alpha A7 series.

Impressive levels of sharpness, Weather sealed lens, De-click switch provided, Well-controlled chromatic aberrations, Good resistance to flare, Compact and relatively lightweight, Close-focusing

Vignetting can be seen depending on the subject, Price compared to the competition

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens - Brand New review

In fact, the lens has just one flaw, something you could anticipate and expect. After all it would be foolish to think an instrument with such dimensions and parameters would be able to correct vignetting in a perfect way.

solid, weather-sealed mechanical construction,, moderate dimensions and low weight, taking into account offered parameters,, brilliant image quality in the frame centre up from the maximum relative aperture,, good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, acceptable image quality on the edge...

very high vignetting on full frame.

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens - Brand New review

The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G sets new records for the performance of an ultra-wide lens. Its sharpness, distortion, coma, and chromatic aberration performances are all best-in-class, not to mention that it’s well-built and very portable.

Best-in-class optical performance in almost every regard, including groundbreaking sharpness, Remarkably accurate autofocus and good low-light focusing capabilities, Excellent build quality with tight tolerances and useful handling features, Small and light – surprisingly so, considering the...

High levels of focus breathing, worth noting for videographers, Significant vignetting at infinity focus (and still noticeable at narrow apertures), Flare is on the high side at narrow apertures

Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.
