The Sony KDL-40EX720 ($1299 MSRP) is an LED-edgelit LCD capable of 3D display. These second-gen 3D TVs are finally coming down in price, but we're still not sold on the whole headache & eyestrain thing.

The picture quality is amazing. Viewing movies and programs which require high sound effects is a great experience due to the surround sound feature.

Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720
While the TV sits at the top of the company's EX range it lacks that certain sparkle helping it to stand out. Design-wise, the company is using last year's blueprints and picture quality isn't a huge step up on last year.
Pros:
- Decent blacks
- High-quality noise reduction
- On-board 3D sensor
- Good selection of IPTV content
Cons:
- Poor 3D mode
- Low motion detail
- Hollow sound
- No wireless on-board
- No 3D glasses
- Contrast could be better

Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720 review: Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720
The Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720 is a decent smart TV that offers a good quality picture, but a spotty feature count for the money. For the first time, Sony is offering 3D in a mid-range television with the release of the EX720, but this isn't something that the company is focusing on. In fact, it seems almost shy about the 3D capabilities of this screen and while the TV has a 3D sensor on-board, Sony doesn't even bundle a set of glasses with it!
Pros:
- Decent blacks. High-quality noise reduction. On-board 3D sensor. Good selection of IPTV content.
Cons:
- Poor 3D mode. Low motion detail. Hollow sound. No wireless on-board. No 3D glasses. Contrast could be better.

Sony Bravia KDL-55EX720 3D LCD HDTV
Order of LEDs on the SideThe movement to replace the traditional fluorescent (CCFL) backlighting for LCD displays with LEDs has become a flood. Sony's 2011 lineup is dominated by LED-lit LCDs.

Sony BRAVIA KDL-40EX720
Sony's days at the top of the TV food chain may, for the moment, be behind it thanks to vicious competition from the likes of Samsung, but the company's still in the business of making top-notch tellies.
Pros:
- Great picture quality and colour representation
- snappy looks
Cons:
- No built-in Wi-Fi
- troubling browser interface

Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720
PCMag did not test the Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720. We did, however, test and review the Sony Bravia KDL-46EX720 from the same series. A notch larger than the 32-inch KDL-32EX720 , the Sony Bravia KDL-40EX720 ($1,079 direct) is a 40-inch edge-lit LED HDTV with 1080p video in both 2D and 3D.
